It might be worded a little differently, but yeah, it's basically the same. Now I'm ashamed. Well, not that ashamed. |

As the OP of that thread, I think they're different enough to justify keeping both alive. But don't be shocked if this doesn't get many responses.

Born in 1960
1969: Hear Whole Lotta Love for the first time. Instant Zep Head. Steady diet of Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Grand Funk, etc. for the next few years. Mid 70s: Hear Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, early Genesis, ELP , and Yes. Instant Prog and Fusion nut. Mid 80s: Being a guitarist dove into the Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani stuff big time. Very recently have "discovered" stuff like Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Katatonia, Opeth, Glass Hammer, Animals as Leaders, Pain of Salvation, Riverside, and a bunch of others who combine all of my earlier influences. My iTunes is filled with albums that span the last 45 or so years. |

Nice thread!
Well, when I was a kid I only listened to my older brother's stuff which was almost poppish Alternative Rock such as U2, R.E.M., Coldplay, Oasis ecc., and a few songs I discovered by chance on my own, but it wasn't a true listening of music.. I mean, I was only listening to my brother's stuff, but never searching for "my" music on purpose. Then, at the age of 13, my interest in music grew and I started searching for my own music. Gradually, I moved from my brother's poppish Alternative Rock to strictly Hard/ballad Rock and Metal of the 80's (the first band I really loved was the Guns N Roses) Then, after a couple of years, I realized how much the "hard rocker/metalhead with backcombed hair" character was ridicolous. I felt like a living stereotype, and that kind of music was getting boring. That's when, at the age of 15, I discovered Indie Rock and became an hipster. I started listening to Sigur Ròs, Belle & Sebastian and many italian unpopular bands. Thank God, I stopped being an arrogant genius-wannabe at the age of 17, when I discovered Electronic music. Before that, I thought that everything that wasn't in the boundaries of Rock, wasn't music in the first place. But when I discovered Burial, Kode9, Cooly G, The Space Ape and all that culture, I felt like I was born again, I realized how much overrated the Indie Rock scene is and how much people loath "mainstream" genres without even listening to them. Until now, I've been digging not only Electronica, but also Jazz, Blues, vintage Rock of the 50's and 60's, Funk, Soul, Reggae, Hip Hop, Pop.. Even Ethnic and World music. The list is too long. Let's say that currently, I enjoy everything that has either a soulful vibe, a funny/danceable rhythm, a bluesy mood or a deep and futuristic atmosphere. If I wanted to be as brief as possible, I should've said that I moved from white music to Black music. Last edited by Madda; 10-23-2014 at 06:20 AM. |
