1966: 5 Years old - First Record Player. First records - Beatles/Rubber Soul & a Roger Miller greatest hits record (Dang Me, Rollerskate, etc).
1967: Consciously asked to buy my first record - Beatles/Yellow Submarine. Mom is afraid it's about drugs, but buys it for me anyway. Go mom! 1968: Mom remarries, Step-Dad turns me on to Hank Snow, Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys Jim Kweskin's Jug Band. Eclecticism abounds. 1973: Junior High School - Meet my best friend (to this day) and we discover the joys of Aeorsmith, Led Zepplin, Ted Nugent, Etc. 1974: Spending summers with Bio Father - turns me on to Pop Jazz (Michael Franks, Chuck Mangione, Spyrogyra) and Real Jazz (Coltrane, Miles, etc.). I prefer Real Jazz but notice Pop Jazz seems to draw a lot more tail. First lessons of Puberty. 1975: High School - Discovery of POT occurs, along with heavy rotation of bands like Rush and Yes. This is not a coincidence. 1976: Already deeply disillusioned with the state of musical affairs. Even in High School, I thought Journey, Boston and Styx were shyte bands. Fortunately, this year, I also discover Bowie, Roxy Music and Be Bop Deluxe and am saved, 1977-1979: Birth of New Wave - Bands like Devo, Talking Heads, The Police, The Cars and many others start popping up. It is a glorious time. 1980-1982: Deejay at Community Radio Station. At the same time that I am discovering extreme weirdness like the Residents, Beefheart and my beloved Throbbing Gristle, I'm also learning all about trad music through Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, Harry Smith and many others. I got an intensive musical education during these years. 1986-1991: Ping ponging between extreme/industrial music and traditional blues and jazz. Big drinking and drug period for me. Not sure if this had an influence on my musical tastes. Got to a point where I was only listening to music from the 30's. Probably as close as I came to becoming a 78 collector. Horrors! 1992-2001: Got to travel the world during these years. Just listened to whatever I found wherever I went. Swedish Disco, Shanghai Lounge Music from the 40's, Aboriginal Didgeridoo workouts and a particular emphasis on Japanese girl garage bands from Osaka. Happily managed to avoid AOR so popular at the time: Counting Crows, Hootie, Dave Matthews, etc. 2001-2011: Stop traveling, resume (vinyl) record collecting and discover downloading all at once. Proceed to try and download every song ever made. Spend rest of 'oughts' listening to anything and everything. Another big part of my musical education happens here. 2012: Turn 50 - Midlife crisis consists of suddenly going back and re-discovering 80's metal - Non-stop barrage of Judas Priest, Dio and especially Iron Maiden. 2013: Mid-life crisis continues. Now it's all about 90's Gangster Rap - Become a HUGE Wu-Tang fan. Metal love continues - I discover Thrash, Doom, etc. 2014: More of the same. Wu-Tang Forever. SLAYER!!!! etc...starting to really get into Soundtrack music - 70's Giallo, Sci-Fi, etc. Happy to see all these new, high quality vinyl versions of favorite records coming out but not happy about the prices. This can't be sustained. Not sure what is in store next but I'm ready for it! |
