It's the guitar tone and partly his singing style.

I don't want that. SYL is just the only time I could get behind Townsend.

You like vaporwave, so I don't see how you can say those particular types of influences are cringey. People who let guitar tone or production style get in their way of appreciating something are the ones with the problem. You gotta be like Rocky and get in the ring boi.

Agreed with all this. 'Funeral' is a magnificent song with an overall aesthetic that has more in common with shoegaze than AOR. What Frown is talking about is a stupid complaint. It's like saying In The Court Of The Crimson King isn't worth someone's time because it was made in 1969 and doesn't have trap beatz.

not to mention he put the only Slipknot album worth while way too low on the list

I don't like all vaporwave, like Eccojams for example. And don't worry, Devin is great at making the whole package unpalatable for me, guitar tone and overpolished (which makes it sound inauthentic imo) are just two elements of that particular album that I don't like.

Wut. Production and tone affect how music sounds. Sound is kind of the main thing that music is about, so changing that will change the music.

Am I talking to a crash test dummy or something?

I'm supposed to like it so I can feel enlightened or something like that.

They are stupid complaints that ignore the actual songwriting at play because he thinks a guitar tone is too 80's-ish and thus the album is unlistenable. This isn't hard to understand: think about people dismissing your favorite early 90's death metal albums because of the way they were produced or what they were trying to go for.

I lost track to who made the original complaint. But a lot of other people complain about 80s sound production from louder snare drums to over processed guitars or the thin sounds or overused factory settings of FM synthesizers etc etc. And some people mark the end of the 80s are the beginning of the volume wars. Whenever I see a complaint about the 80s I see it as a typical complaint, I don't immediately chalk it up as a stupid complaint. Personally I tend to prefer the lot-fi sounds during the early 80s to the hi production sounds of late 80s.
