Everyone who got tricked into liking Ocean Machines: wow this album really has amazing production
Me: nah it's too sterile
Anteater: it doesn't make any sense to judge this album by its production

Anteater: The problem is you, not the album

ftfy

I'm just ****ing with you man, feel however you want. :)

I'm fuzzy on this math. Does you liking 80s elements make you arrogant because you don't keep it a secret like I do? (not that I do, just building on your premise)

Idk man, responding so poorly to someone criticizing something you like is trademark self-consciousness.

I don't think I've ever dismissed an album based entirely on the production, but it's definetely a factor. I might find an album less appealing if it sounds sterile (a pet peeve of mine too) or if it has annoying drums or is retardedly overcompressed or something. Albums with excellent production are obviously helped by it, but the compositions have to be good, otherwise it's like polishing a turd.

Another thing: I love how different all these top 50 posts are from each other. I have precisely 1 album in common with Loathsome Pete and seemingly zero in common with everyone else.

The production of an album is a secondary element. A good song is a good song regardless of the era or how it was recorded. Ocean Machine: Biomech's production complements what Townsend was trying to do, simple as that. If he had done it any other way then it would have been another Type O Negative album and it wouldn't have stood out as much circa 1997 or contrasted with his work with SYL. But when we talk about production, mixing, etc. and what sounds good vs what doesn't sound good...that's where subjective taste comes in, no?

I thought I did a brilliant job responding to you considering your high level of eye rolling snark. If your gonna be contrary after I point that out, then that tells me I'm on a good path.

Diversity aside, one of the fun things about MusicBanter is you can shitpost all you want and at the end of the day they'll all still be here a year later jerking off to MBV. :D

I 100% agree with this. Townsend's songs on the record in question are plain dull to me so they don't count as good songs regardless of the era they come from or sound like they come from. When I said "80s arena rock," I meant it as a pretty specific style, not the entirety of music from the 80s.

Obviously. What does that have to do with anything?

I'd have dropped this awhile back if you at least acknowledged that 'Funeral', 'Voices In The Fan', etc. were good for what they are. Your so at odds with the majority of other critical reviews out there that you can't blame me for looking at you a little sideways. *shrug*

What's an MBV and what does it do?
I'm still < 1000 posts and as such not attuned to the finer points of Music-Bantering yet.

If it'll make you feel better, I fully recognize that the album is great for what it is. It's not like it sounds or was written the way it was on accident, Townsend fully accomplished what he set out to do. I simply just hate everything that the album is.
