James really should start a journal.

Goofle 11-23-2014 07:01 PM

He has one. Or maybe two.

I have one hidden in the dark depths of the site. Haven't posted in a while, but I'll be doing a Bowie thing this week and should be posting more soon. Want to start writing about music again.

One of my favourite records from this year! I'll be interested to hear you're take on it as it's not exactly a style you're averse to yet at the same time it's quite unconventional. Also as an older gentleman, you might appreciate some of the themes more than I can, and I love this album.

Well, I really don't like it much at all. It completely bored me both times I tried getting into it. Musically uninteresting and lyrically just meh. Like, I don't care what he has to say.

I could totally see why someone wouldn't like it. Kozelek is quite the awful human. Arrogance is rife. That stream of consciousness style is very love hate, same reason people either adore or despise writers like Joyce and Woolf.

Zhanteimi 11-23-2014 07:22 PM

When I played Benji for my darling, she said, "I don't want to know those things about a stranger".

Ah, just dug it up and read through. You didn't post during my initial tenure back in February and March, and haven't posted since I returned - that's why I missed it.

I recommend to you

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.R.M.C

I honestly have no grasp whatsoever on your taste, but not for lack of trying. I suppose it actually may be more the fact that I don't know what grabs you when you listen to something new, but either way, this is a solid album that you may or may not have heard/reviewed before. If you have, then I'll quietly see my way out but if not I sincerely hope you enjoy. :)

On the contrary: it is overshadowed by Eldorado, which is a timeless classic and considered by many to be "near-perfect" (even with the imperfections of Union session string players closing their instrument cases recorded on it :D) but, as Prog as it is, Eldorado was also the beginning of the "pop sensibilities" that would consume Jeff Lynne by the end of the 70s...

However, On The Third Day is probably their most "Prog" album - literally a combination of Canterbury and Symphonic Prog -- and they explored these areas only once on this particular album and never again. I often wonder what ELO would have sounded like had they continued down this path :thumb: ...so, Im curious about your review of it

Ho Ho Ho

You should read my journals more! Seriously, for someone who apparently has no grasp on my music taste you look like you've hit pretty close to the mark. I'll enjoy listening to and reviewing that. Thanks Steph! :thumb:

As a matter of interest, what grabs me is melody (I keep telling her to leave me alone when I'm writing!), well-written songs, good lyrics, good instrumentation and the power to move me in either a positive way or a negative one that benefits me, eg something that makes me cry (Antlers). I'm not a fan of music I can't determine (black metal, grindcore, that sort of thing), that doesn't speak to me (hip hop? I'm a Dubliner, for Chrissakes!) or bland pop material. Generally. Though I'll always try to do my best to sample new stuff. If it clicks it clicks (Chvrches) if it doesn't it doesn't (Auteurs). I'm not too fond of moving beyond my comfort zone but I will if I find something I like.

Aren't you sorry you asked now? :D

Check out Jacuzzi Boys' self titled album. It's their most recent release, came out last year, and I've been trying to get everyone I know to check them out. They're awesome an psychedelic post-punk band from Miami, Florida.

Have you heard Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized? If not, that's my pick. If yes, try Drive-By Truckers' Decoration Day. If you've heard both of those, um... how about Swans? I'll go with their latest, which is To Be Kind If you've heard all three of those, pick any one of them.

Zhanteimi 11-24-2014 09:03 PM

^Ladies and Gentlemen is an excellent choice!

DwnWthVwls 11-24-2014 10:30 PM

Am I too late to the party? Idk what kind of music you listen to so I'm hoping you can at least tolerate my choice. Don't worry I won't pick a hiphop album even though I would love to.

Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle

I think you're just about in --- four left to go I think --- and as it happens I was thinking about that album, so yeah, good pick! Thanks!

Trollheart 11-25-2014 05:20 AM

Actually I miscounted: you literally just got in at the end. 24 albums now received. So that's it.

Thanks guys: I'll start listening to them soon. What do you mean, no opening of presents till Christmas morning? You want me to listen to 24 albums AND review them in one day? Oh, and the journals of Trollheart are closed Christmas Day.

Yeah, hide them but I'll find 'em before Christmas, you know I will... :D

DwnWthVwls 11-25-2014 04:20 PM

Sweet. Looking forward to it Troll. Enjoy!

I deleted my previous rec, and I'm choosing this instead: the best album I've heard from 2014. It's a wonder to behold.

Just thought I'd drop the Bandcamp link here since the album isn't on Spotify.

Sorry but I have all the slots filled up now. 24 albums for 24 days. Thanks for thinking of me but I can't take any more albums on.

And no, I haven't ever been in plug so I have not seen you spin it, not personally. It's alien territory to me, and will remain so.

So where's the reviews?

Rules: Only one album per member, first come first served, in other words, the first 24 people to respond will have their albums reviewed. After that, you're too late. Make sure there's a link for your album I can follow and if it's very obscure give me a little information about it. Ideally, no albums I have already reviewed. Also, remember that if I hate it I will say I hate it, so don't get all protective. You can send me an album you think I'll hate, but if I do then be prepared to have it villified. And I'll say nasty things about it too! ;)

So drop your suggestions here. If you get an album in and want to change it later, and have already been accepted, then you can do so. But only once.

Oh yeah, nice glittery paper please people: none of that cheap stuff! :)

PS: Try to use this an an opportunity to get me to like an album you like, rather than hoping to blow my brains out with one I'd really hate. This is not The Batlord's Torture Chamber again!

In my journal, where I said they would be...

Edit: Actually, I see I didn't say that specifically, but I think everyone here understood that that was what was happening. Also, they're not reviews, just a general comment about what I thought of them, if I liked them etc.

Difference is, if you've read any of the reviews in my journals, I do an intro about the album/artiste, then a track-by-track review and close it out with my final thoughts. Here, all I'm doing is saying things like "Enjoyed that, thought all the tracks were good" or "Not my cup of tea really". Very short, even shorter than my "Bitesize" reviews, and not what I would call reviews at all.

Zhanteimi 12-19-2014 04:55 PM

Got it. Have read some of your reviews. I just think it's all the same, since it's all just opinion.

Well, yes, but what I mean is that in a "proper" review I can put forward the reasons why I like or don't like an album, what it makes me feel like, what the lyrics are (or what I think they are) and so on. In a short "Christmas note" like these I can't do that. Mind you, if anyone wants me to do a proper review after Christmas I'll consider it. Maybe.

I don't like Dream Theater either. Or ELP. Just because you're a fan of prog doesn't necessarily mean you want to listen to twenty minutes of pointless noodling that goes nowhere and does nothing but shout "Look how good I am on my instrument! Aren't I clever?" I have no time for that, in any genre, but prog rock is the very worst offender by a country mile.

Ahem. Genesis. VDGG. Rush. Supertramp. Hawkwind. I like a lot of 70s prog, just not all of it. I did get into prog via Marillion and Genesis, but I listen to plenty of seventies prog. "Hemispheres" and "2112" are great albums. As is all of Genesis's pre-"Abacab" catalogue. And Steve Hackett.

Never. 70s Genesis is my favourite era: "Trick of the Tail", "Trespass", "Foxtrot", "Wind and wuthering", all stellar albums. Plus my very first ever Genesis album (and first ever post in my original journal) was "Seconds out", which is a double-live from the 70s.

You may be thinking of Yes, yes?
