Best Year for Music Tournament

I'm shamelessly taking this idea from another forum I'm on (which many of you are on also?), because it's a fun thing that we can do. Mods please move if this should be in the subforum that has "games" in the title - I figured that, like all the survivor threads, it belonged in the music forums because it deals with music.

Anyway, the game is pretty simple. Each person claims a year - by doing so, you gain access to all the releases from that year (if there's a question about what year something came out, we'll default to what RYM says). We have a tournament of head-to-head year-vs-year matchups (if the mods don't want me clogging the forum with poll threads we can do it through an external poll site and I can post links in one core thread), but the thing that actually makes it about the person whose year it is and not just the year itself is that for each match, you have to pick a team of four albums/EPs and four singles (I'd consider counting EPs with singles if people want that, but if nobody cares I'll keep it as is). For the first few rounds, there can be no overlap between these teams - i.e. if you have 1965 and you pick Otis Blue for your match against the guy who has 1997, you can't pick it again for your next match against the guy who has 1988. In later rounds, you'll get bigger teams and you'll be allowed to reuse some releases; in the final, you'll be able to pick whatever releases you want and your teams will be (tentatively) 10 albums and 10 singles.

I would go into more detail about how the bracket will be structured and the specific rules for each round, but that will depend on how much interest there is, so I'm just going to open the thread to claims and questions. Pick any year from 1956 through 2014 - you can go earlier if you feel really strongly about it, but I'd rather you not; similarly, you can pick 2015, I guess, but there's no way the bench is going to be deep enough to carry you through the whole tournament. If not enough people are interested, I'll let you each have two years instead of one, so when you claim, put down a second choice for year as well. Year assignments are going to be entirely first-come-first-serve, with the caveat that a later poster's first choice takes precedence over an earlier poster's second choice if I do allow two years per person.

I hope you people think this is a good idea!

Pet_Sounds 01-25-2015 07:18 PM

Sorry, it wasn't the clearest post. It's all the parentheses. Glad you figured it out.

I'll add everyone to the list when I'm on my computer again.

Frownland 01-25-2015 08:34 PM

I'll take 1981.

Neapolitan 01-25-2015 11:30 PM

I have no idea what you are doing or how you are going about it but I pick 1970 or 1971. Tough call.
edit: I think I'll go with 1971

I'll give this a shot and instead of thinking logically/historically I'm going to go with personally/heart and go with 2006.

Rexx Shredd 01-26-2015 12:29 PM

1973

James 01-26-2015 12:38 PM

Oh Goodie! Somebody has 19 - "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by The Ohio Express - 66 :)

JennyOndioline 01-26-2015 08:53 PM

Since 1994 is taken, I'll give 2007 a shot. Because I'm a young'un.

2012 was the year I discovered one of the best albums I ever heard so I'm going with that year.

2015 was the year I discovered one of the best albums I ever heard and it was released in 1971 so I'm going with that year.

I'll rephrase my post. The album was released in the year I chose as well as being one of the best albums i've ever heard.

Norg 01-29-2015 12:58 AM

don't know what we are doing BUT put me down for

2002

2002 I was a junior in highschool LOL

Josef K 01-29-2015 04:58 AM

I've given myself 1997, and we now have an even 16. We'll start with a (randomly generated) group phase, with your first matchups listed below:

Group A
1966 - DriveYourCarDownToTheSea vs. 1994 - Mondo Bungle
2002 - Norg vs. 2010 - James

Group B
1979 - Janszoon vs. 1981 - Frownland
2007 - JennyOndioline vs. 2012 - Ki

Group C
1967 - Pet_Sounds vs. 1973 - Rexx Shredd
1977 - YorkeDaddy vs. 2013 - Machine

Group D
1971 - Neapolitan vs. 1993 - Goofle
1997 - Josef K vs. 2006 - Charlemagne

You must use a unique team of four albums and four singles for each match of the group round - that is, no overlap at all. We'll break to quarterfinals. In quarters, you'll use six albums and four singles. You can reuse two albums and a single, but the rest have to be new. In semis, you'll have eight albums and six singles. Two of each have to be new. In finals, you'll have a team of ten albums and eight singles, and none of them have to be new.

PM me your teams for the first round within the next two days, I'll get them posted along with posting polls.

Pet_Sounds 01-29-2015 06:00 AM

Do singles include the B-side as well as the A-side?

You paired me with someone who probably isn't going to be that active. Awesome.

Goofle 01-29-2015 10:45 AM

Crazy thing is that 1971 is probably in my Top 5 years based on RYM.

Frownland 01-29-2015 10:48 AM

Sent. You're going down, Janzszcsoon.

Can the singles come off the albums we send?

Sure.

The group stage is round-robin, also. I think that goes without saying, but in case anyone was unsure.

Wait, so what did you mean by no overlap? As in having the same artist as the other person? I thought it meant that the singles and albums had to be from different albums.

It means you can't use the same album/single twice in the group stage. If you didn't understand that rule and it affects your strategy, feel free to submit a new list (this goes for anyone).

Sweet. I saw Tucker play in a fundraiser game about five years ago, and he got a hat trick. Don Cherry was one of the coaches, and Stephen Harper dropped the puck.
