Is it possible to be an Original Band?

Much is often said about succesful bands. Things like "yeah they're not bad but they sound a lot like the Beatles, or Yeah they're ok but it's a rip off of Queen. Is there actually a completely original band out there. Does it really matter anyway?

If there weren't any original bands wouldn't there be only one genre?

I can't understand your reasoning. In one particular genre you might have several different original slants on it. Do you get me?

Yeah, there are original bands. Only thing is, it rarely gets noticed. Its only natural for people to prefer one type of music over another, and something thats completely different to what they prefer wont appeal to LOTS of people.

Hmm. I thought it made sense, but reading back over it.. I dont think it does. Oh well. Make of it what you will.

Mars Volta are pretty original, which proves Dezzy's point, because most prog music is original, because thats what prog is really.

Otherwise most of this millenium has been based on copycatting 80s and 60s music, The Strokes=Velvet Underground + Television, The Killers= New Order + Duran Duran, Coldplay= U2+ Sleeping pills

*Yes I realize Televison were in the 70s, left that off the list accidentaly

Yeah but most of the time when a genre has a new "slant" on it, it becomes a subgenre in it's own right and its original bands that make these genres.

I'm struggling to understand this now. Do you mean the original bands make the subgenre's or first genre?

Well, you can't say a musician is totally inauthentic because of their influence(s). Writers, painters, even politicians have influences. Even if a band say worshipped the Beatles and basically rewrote their songs, there is room for originality, just based on how they interpret a given Beatles song.

There's a lot of creative talent out there, I think AITA was trying to say something like this, but success has really nothing to do with it (damn trend setters). Maybe what she was trying to say was, people tend to stick to a certain sound and dont realize what's out there.

well a lot of music is about personal opinion and interpretation so orgininality is pretty much based on whether or not one person thinks they are original or not... like others have said, you can sound like a band and still be original......
