Complete Beginner - Please help!

Hey everybody,

I've always wanted to get better at singing but the whole idea of it seems so overwhelming. Besides singing choir in 5th and 6th grade, I haven't sung in my life. I'd like to get better for recreational purposes (maybe karaoke someday) as it seems like it could be a lot of fun. I've looked for singing lessons online, but I feel like I'd be really subconscious and awkward with the situation. Are lessons the best way to go about this or are there other alternatives?

There are plenty of books on the subject, maybe there is something that's worth getting. I wouldn't discourage going for lessons though. There things you can learn from an instructor that you might not find out otherwise that could be important.

Practice, practice, practice... but don't over-do it; be careful not to strain your voice.
