Australia vs Rest
How would you say Australian music stacks up against the rest of the world?
( And no, this isn't for a school project so NERRR! :) ) |
Well let's see...Youve got Jet....and...hmm...*racks brain for slightly relevant Aussie band in modern rock*..and...The Vines......
Yeah the rest of the world hasnt got a chance against you lot |
feck off, im creating interesting musical discussion...
we got powderfinger and grinspoon and spiderbait and JET! and the vines and cold chisel and INXS and *goes on for hours*...... |
I think if you look around enough, most countries music scenes are pretty equal (as far as the quality of music produced). Alot of what is percived as "better" has to do with how much publicity an artist or band gets. I know I like some non-US bands, but the only reason I know about them is because they are marketed in the USA. I'm sure your music is just as good as everyone else, but it probably just doesn't get enough exposure (at least in the US). And since most mainstream people don't go looking in other countries for music, it stands to reason that we only hear whats marketed in our particular part of the world.
|
I think Australia have a few decent bands e.g Jet and AC DC..I mean INXS are from New Zealand arn't they?? I thought half there mebers were aussies and the other half kiwis..you've got nothing on Britain though..Mind you who has??
|
nah INXS is fully aussie.. i think youre thinkin about crowded house.....
|
If it wasnt for Australia nobody would be asking the question "where will we sleep when our beds are burning?"
and even though shes born in england, i doubt anyone would know who olivia newton john is if she didnt come out of australia ahhh olivia, i am still hopelessly devoted to youuuuu!!!! http://www.onlyolivia.com/aboutonj/onj66.jpg |
yes, midnight oil were a great band, very big influence on our conservation efforts here in aus...
on the subject, peter garret joined the labor party (major political party) :yikes: what does one do when they are too old for music? POLITICS! but seriously, big influence.... |
let's not forget Silverchair
|
^ yep, daniel johns is a legend....
what do you think of his new band, the dissociatives, with paul mac? if youve heard of them....... |
Divinyls were from Australia werent they? gotta love the song "touch myself"
and nobodys mentioned MEN AT WORK???!!!! |

I read an article a couple months ago about australia having a rapidly growing underground hip-hop scene, and that in a couple of years they'll be blowin' it up. |
hilltop hoods rock.... check nosebleed section^
^^ yup, divinyls - aussie... men at work are awesome too.... also, dont forget INXS... great funk/rock/pop blend |

spiderbait id rather not kno of their existence jet are perhaps the biggest rip offs in the rock industry. cold chisel...who? grinspoon..who? i like the vines though, highly evolved is a nice little garage rock album. however, the only artist ive really ever felt inspired by is nick cave. AC/DC, the birthday party, the fauves, the avalanches, the easybeats- none of them have ever really done anything for me. but each to their own!. |
Quote:
2. to each their own :D 3. yes but they still good fun for light relief... 4. jimmy barnes, great vocalist, has since had amazing solo career... 5. great band... i think youd like em, but who knows also, check out the whitlams everyone....... |

"do you come from the land down uder?
where women glow and men plunder? can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder? you better run you better take cover" but seriously though, brittain and america are the only two superpowers in music...australia has little to offer... |
I said " do you speak my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegimite sandwich |
|
the only band that comes to mind is Lalotoa.....i like them, i can only find 3 of their songs though....

so there.... |
but pastor, where australia has AC/DC...britian has the beatles, led zeppelin, black sabbath, pink floyd, the who etc etc etc. i do happen to agree with adidasss unfortunatly.
|
^ yeah i see this... this is basically a band to band thread pretty much... cos i know britain and the US completely ****s australia over in the overall... i just wanted peoples views on australian bands in comparison to other bands from other countries rather than a total overview... :)
|
well my view is that australian music in the english speaking music league...is 4th. behind britian, the US and canada.
|
yeah... i can agree with that... like i said, im more interested in how you think bands compare...
for example: AC/DC v The Who or: Midnight Oil v The Clash both in terms of music they created and influence they had.... |
i dont know who midnight oil are so cant help you there. in fact my knowledge on australian music is pretty abysmal. the fauves are ok i suppose..dont know who to compare them to .
|
mmm... fair enough...
i dont really know that much bout british music so its all good.... recommendations: cold chisel (cool rock stuff) INXS (funk/pop/rock) AC/DC (of course) The Easybeats (George Young from AC/DC in this before AC/DC) Men at Work (plain cool) most of anything else mentioned that ive missed....... yeah... so check them out for a start :) |
also, for new stuff check out the following...
Jet (rock n roll baby!) powderfinger (bluesy pop/rock) grinspoon (rocking) little birdy (pop/rock) thirsty merc (pop/rock) again others i may have missed but thatll do to start...... |
who doesnt know jet? cool if you want any british/american/canadian/european recommendations just ask.
|
^ yeah true....
k thanks dude..... ill ask when i need some new ones but im on a bit of a backlog at the moment ;) |

Sure the UK and the US are the two music superpowers in the world, but I think Australia has done pretty well for themselves considering their a remote island continent that's pretty far removed from both the US and Brittain. Can anyone name a country doesn't directly border the US or Brittain that has had anywhere near the prolific musical output that Australia has?
