Rough Draft: My Favorite 1000 Bands

So, over the past years I have compiled a list of my favorite bands. I know there are still many bands out there I either forgot about or just have yet to discover. Also, there are some artists I will eventually remove from this list. This is definitely a rough draft.

Anyways, feel free to comment on the list. Who am I missing, who do you find funny that I included, and who are you impressed that I have on the list?

Spoiler for Here is the list...:

Dude! So mean lol. Take forever.

Trollheart 04-22-2015 10:02 AM

I'll go through that list later; saw some I agree with. Being an old mainstream fuddy-duddy, many of them won't mean anything to me but I was glad to see some I did recognise.

Small point: the list is of course very long so maybe spoiler it so that you don't have to scroll all that way down to get to later posts? Just a suggestion.

Well anyone can list 1000 bands they like with absolutely no context to support them.

joenorwood77 04-22-2015 12:43 PM

Well obviously writing something for each of 1000 bands will take forever. HOWEVER, this is one of the reasons I am doing my artist/band of the week project. Guess what? Eventually each of these 1000 will have their week of glory where I choose their top 5 (and hopefully some of you will be doing the same with me. So, I will not necessarily write down stuff about their style or whatever, but I will definitely have their top 5. I mean, I guess before the week is over I can write a sentence or two about the band overall.

But yeah, I definitely spent a lot of time creating the list. Hopefully some of you take interest in it and maybe some of you will discover some new music on the list as well. I do not have a lot of obscure ones, but definitely a handful of bands most people may not know.

You have no Slayer, but you include Slaughter? Trash the entire list. Start over.

But yeah, I definitely spent a lot of time creating the list. Hopefully some of you take interest in it and maybe some of you will discover some new music on the list as well. I do not have a lot of obscure ones, but definitely a handful of bands most people may not know.

Can't wait for artist of the week 956 which will be in like 20 years

joenorwood77 04-22-2015 02:09 PM

I never got into Slayer. which I know may seem strange based on a lot of bands on my list.

Regarding Slaughter, they were solid back in the day. Mark Slaughter's voice is so messed up now days though. It was actually sad hearing him try to sing. The drummer is extremely entertaining live though. They are still worth checking out live for the drummer alone.

I know it will take 20+ years to do one artist per week. If I did not work or have any responsibilities, I would do one artist per day instead. LOL

Getting through 50-52 bands per year is still solid though.

I may not be the most cynical person, but you can't tell me you spent 19-20 years on this list.

Nope. However, I just started doing my artist/band of the week thing, where I will focus on one of the 1000 bands each week, listening to their entire catalog, and select my favorite 5 songs by them. So, I will get through about 50-52 bands per year with THAT project. Within about 20 years, hopefully I have my top 5 for each of my 1000 fave artists.

Let's ignore the fact that tastes change over time

My #1 favorite band 5 years ago, Radiohead, probably wouldn't even break my top 100 anymore

joenorwood77 04-22-2015 04:39 PM

I would be naive to believe once I get through all 1000 bands, that my tastes would not change. That is part of the fun though; as I go through the list, I will remove some while adding others. This is a completely fluid process. Hopefully when I post some bands of the week, people will respond stating something like, "if you like these guys, you should really check out so and so".

It still amazes me how there are haters on this forum. I am just trying to post things to create discussions. What harm is there in me choosing 1000 bands and featuring 1 per week? Worst case I will feature some bands I eventually do not like as much. I guess the only bad outcomes are if no one posts or if the only posts are negative ones.

YorkeDaddy 04-22-2015 04:44 PM

You come across as immature and overly ambitious to an obnoxious degree, which usually rubs people the wrong way. I mean the term "hater" alone reminds me of the Mountain Dew Call of Duty generation and makes me want to puke

You seem like a fine, friendly dude but a "top 1000 bands" with a weekly band of the week where you expect people to listen to entire discographies is all just silly, basically I and the rest of us probably think you should just tone it back and ease yourself into the forum by commenting in existing threads rather than trying out these ridiculous projects a week within registering.

I'm not going to take interest in a list that I could just find by doing a simple Google search.

It's kind of this yes. Even posting a list of 1000 bands, line by line, made this thread an annoyance to get into until page 2 arrived, as you had to page down or ctrl end unless you wanted to scroll, scroll, scroll ... a thousand lines is a long way to scroll. It just annoys people having to do this every time.

It's a little ambitious, but if you want to do it, I would suggest checking out our Journals Section, as something like this would be better suited to that section. I am already well into the history of progressive rock, 1001 albums you should hear before you die and various discographies in my journals, so if you posted there you might not get as much negative feedback, plus if you actually start writing about the artistes more people may be interested.

I still seriously doubt though that anyone is going to listen to a full discog a week, as you seem to want people to. Most may listen to what you have to say when you do it (if you do it) but I can't see a huge number of people (or anyone really) jumping on board. It's hard enough to get people to listen to one album a week, never mind a whole discography.

But yeah: as YD says, join in the discussions (I see you have already, but maybe outside of the GnR idea) and get to know us. We may not seem such *******s then. Or we may. Who knows. But at least you'll get to interact with us a little more.

Also, again, for the love of god, spoilers on that OP? Now that we're on page two it's not so bad but really, it's a pain going past all those albums. A simple spoiler tag would sort it.

I used the word "hater" because it was basically a significantly nicer version of words that first came into my mind. Hater is a word I have used maybe ten times total in my 37 years of life, and that includes the this post.

I am overly ambitious when it comes to things I enjoy and love. I thought finding a music forum would be the place to share this interest. I have been commenting on other peoples topics as well and not just mine.

I do not expect a ton of people to participate in my artist of the week, nor do I expect a lot of people to read all of my nearly 1000 bands. I put stuff out there and hope at least a handful of people might become interested. What rubs me the wrong way is when some people appear to have zero interest in my thoughts but post just to throw jabs at my ideas. Wouldn't the "mature" thing to do is to just not post in those threads you do not have an interest?

I agree the spoilers tag is an excellent idea. I just have no clue how to do it.

I thought I posted on a few other threads that were non-GNR related. Funny thing, is GNR might barely be in my top 10 favorite bands, and more likely top 25, but that is just what was on my mind at the time, and I thought it was a safe band to discuss when joining a music forum. LOL

I had some friends who already joined me in my artist of the week, but they chose to post only on my new blog rather than here because of all of the negativity here. A friend of mine actually suggested I create a blog for that reason. I will continue to do the blog as well as here.

Even if no one here joins me in the artist of the week, I am still going to do it. A few times now over the past few years I tried doing an artist of the day, but even I cannot be THAT ambitious. HAHA

I will check out the journals when I find some time. I appreciate the suggestion.

I guess if anything, for maybe take it easy on the newbies here (not just you but others here as well). I would think you would want people to be happy to join this forum, not make comments to push them away. If someone knows me and gives me crap, I will just give it right back. But we don't even know each other. Maybe some of you don't care though. I guess I don't know when the intention of some responses were.

For some of you, you have given helpful comments and feedback and have been welcoming, and I appreciate that.

One more comment about the top 1000 bands; it is not about me. While it is part of a personal project, posting here was far more about initiating discussion about different bands. It would have been cool to hear some say, "wow, I have not thought about Mr. Bungle for many years" or "I never heard of Rhinobucket before I saw this list and they sound just like Bon Scott era AC/DC", or "WTF is Tiffany doing on your list" or "I forgot that Todd Snider even existed" or maybe even "Rise Against is one of the most underrated bands out there and I am glad they are on your list".

Anyways, there are no more projects I have. I will post my artist of the week every Sunday. I will respond to comments on my current threads, I may contribute to other threads and occasionally add another thread of my own.
It is just unfortunate that when I found this forum with my projects and love for music in mind, I was thrilled and happy and now I just dread seeing an email in my gmail account stating I have another reply, because it will likely be something negative. I definitely did not come here for that.

As far as my maturity, I guess I can refer you to any of my ex's for confirmation on how immature I am. HAHA In all serious though, I worked at a teacher for teens who were in gangs in the Twin Cities area. Many of them have been involved in shootings and crazy stuff. I moved from Minnesota to Maui because I hate snow and cold and unfortunately I found that I make more money as a server than as a teacher. For the time being, I chose the money route, but obviously there is a void in my life when my way of helping people in life is helping them enjoy their dream vacation, and not in trying to save the lives of teens.

So whatever, I am ambitious, long-winded, and get somewhat defensive when strangers diss what I do. Hopefully some people read past all of this stuff and actually comment on some specific bands on my list or missing from my list. :-)

I had a few different lists and thought I had everything on my main one. I also forgot Melanie Martinez and Of Monsters and Men.

Trollheart 04-23-2015 12:02 PM

Believe it or not, I did begin looking through the list and scribbled some thoughts. You have an interestingly eclectic mix there and i will comment on the ones I know of and like. The problem is, every time I look at the list I have to page down a thousand lines, and as I've pointed out already that is an annoyance.

As to the spoilers tag, here's how you do it:
See the icons above your post when you post or quote? The last says Show/Hide. Just highlight the entire post (or ctrl-A) and hit that icon, then it will give you a dialogue box into which you can write a brief explanation of what people can find beyond the spoiler (like "my big-ass list" or whatever) and once you submit it it will show a button people who want to can click to see the list, but to everyone else it will be hidden.

I commend your dedication and ambition, but as I said, myself I'm taking on the discographies of Marillion, Genesis, Asia, Robbie Williams, Eagles, The Divine Comedy and others (have just recently completed the Tom Waits one) and this is taking a long time. Given that I have ten journals in all, post here a lot and also keep other things going, and that I want to write proper reviews, not just one-liners/paragraphs, the Waits discog took me just shy of three months to complete. So my own project is ambitious enough for me to know how big this is, and how likely, if at all, it is to succeed.

I cite the experience of another poster here, young guy who decided to do a whole year devoted to heavy metal. Now I had done, and am continuing to do, a month of Heavy Metal each October, and warned him that to try to devote a year of your life to a project like that was no small thing, and he had better be ready to accept that. Surprise, surprise, within less than a month he had lost interest and focus, and it fell apart.

I'm not saying yours will, but even as a longstanding member here, someone whom people know can dedicate himself to what might seem to others to be a large or even impossible project (recently finished Star Trek Month, Crime Month yet to come and Metal Month III in the works), were I to come up with an idea like yours people would be skeptical. As nobody knows you, and your very first post was this idea and your huge list, well I don't think you should be surprised that it received a lot of derision. But there were some helpful comments as you say, and some general chat too. Yes, some people seem only to want to put the idea down (and I was one but am sort of changing from that stance now) but others have offered advice and even a few I see have taken part, though I note nobody --- and I mean nobody --- who has posted has committed to your idea of listening to a full discography every week. I would be amazed if anyone did, since as I said already it's hard enough to get people interested in smaller projects, and everyone has a life.

Anyway I wish you well with it, and will be back with some comments as soon as I can find the time in between my own various projects. I realise we came across as a little unfriendly; we're not, but you must admit that your first post was not the sort of thing we expect and once you get to know us better you'll probably realise we're just a bunch of dicks I mean quite nice people. Maybe.

Note: try heading into the Lounge, where the discussions are a lot looser and less formal.

I advise you take serious note of everything Trollheart said here. She is wise and one of the forums most celebrated members.

I do advise against trying to fit in. Be you. You don't want to find yourself conforming to something you're not about. But you should be open minded though. You can do this without changing who you are just because one member points out something about you they don't like. And you shouldn't hide making mention of bands you enjoy that you've seen other members completely trash. Don't give in or concede just because sometimes we some tough on you, or new members in general. I've found ways to coexist with members I don't even like, and we get along fine because of that. I did that without changing anything about myself.

You can really learn a lot on this forum. I have for certain learned a lot. You can't be defensive over every little thing. Acknowledge someone else's opinion, even when you don't agree. I need work on that myself. But it is something you have to do. A few members don't like your idea. That's cool man. It doesn't mean you stop doing it. Because there will be someone here that has interest. It's how any thread or topic usually goes here. I open threads now and again, some work, others not so much, but it's fine. If an idea tanks. Think up a better one or at least one that you know will appeal to a larger amount of people here.

Haha, you know, I have two journals here, and I have lost sight of them both. I'm busy. But that should be no excuse, Trollheart has ten, but she manages them all on top of her every day life, and whatever else she's got going on here.

It's like she said. We're not all dicks, or really dicks at all. You just need to go with the flow man. We're easy going once you drop your defenses, and not be so guarded. Pretty much every person that said they don't like this idea of yours. They're all awesome forum members. Trust me on that. First impression can be strong. But they shouldn't always determine how a group of people are, or have you sticking to opinions of those people without getting to know them better.

Stick around. You'll see why I say all of this, as well as why Trollheart does too, in due time.

Thanks to both of you for your recent posts. I understand where you are both coming from and both give sound advice.

I created a spoiler for my original post. Unfortunately, another member quoted that entire list to make a joke, so we still have the issue, just only once now instead of twice.

After I get more settled in here, I will explore the lounge and journal sections.

I guess the main thing that got me upset was I was ready to place a ton of time and effort into something that in my eyes not only benefited me, but also the forum here, and basically everyone here seemed to make a joke of it. It is what it is. I still never expected a lot of people to comment on my 1000 bands list or my bands of the week. I just put that stuff out there for who ever takes interest. I am certain that anyone who checks out those two things will discover some cool music, as I am sure I will also come across artists I never knew about when I check out posts in here.

Anyways, I look forward to getting to know this community better. I guess if anything, it won't be boring here.
