Allmusic.com: Encompassing heavy metal, folk, pure rock & roll, and blues, Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album is a monolithic record, defining not only Led Zeppelin but the sound and style of '70s hard rock. Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their majestic hard rock with a mystical, rural English folk that gives the record an epic scope. Even at its most basic -- the muscular, traditionalist "Rock and Roll" -- the album has a grand sense of drama, which is only deepened by Robert Plant's burgeoning obsession with mythology, religion, and the occult. Plant's mysticism comes to a head on the eerie folk ballad "The Battle of Evermore," a mandolin-driven song with haunting vocals from Sandy Denny, and on the epic "Stairway to Heaven." Of all of Zeppelin's songs, "Stairway to Heaven" is the most famous, and not unjustly. Building from a simple fingerpicked acoustic guitar to a storming torrent of guitar riffs and solos, it encapsulates the entire album in one song. Which, of course, isn't discounting the rest of the album. "Going to California" is the group's best folk song, and the rockers are endlessly inventive, whether it's the complex, multi-layered "Black Dog," the pounding hippie satire "Misty Mountain Hop," or the funky riffs of "Four Sticks." But the closer, "When the Levee Breaks," is the one song truly equal to "Stairway," helping give IV the feeling of an epic. An apocalyptic slice of urban blues, "When the Levee Breaks" is as forceful and frightening as Zeppelin ever got, and its seismic rhythms and layered dynamics illustrate why none of their imitators could ever equal them.

Well I've returned and would be interested in doing one.

For Led Zeppelin a resounding yes. That's one of the first albums I remember falling in love with, my parents played it a lot when I was very, very young.

The Batlord 06-26-2015 06:02 PM

Nah. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the rock tracks are solid, but the folk ones are dull, and since there's a 50/50 split of those, then only half the album is any good.

Josef K 06-26-2015 06:02 PM

Yes - 1
No - 2

Oh and get me on the list.

50/50? You're a dunce.

Only 2 of the 8 tracks can be considered "folk".

Frownland 06-26-2015 06:08 PM

That's a clear yes. Thanks for the background on the album Chula, I wasn't aware of this album until you posted it in here.

Moss 06-26-2015 06:45 PM

Oh hell yes on ZOSO!

All I know is half of the album is folky enough to bore the **** out of me.

YorkeDaddy 06-26-2015 06:56 PM

Yes :P

Oh and it's a clear Yes from me too so

Yes 5
No 2

Pet_Sounds 06-26-2015 08:00 PM

The folky aspects are why I love that album.

Yes - 6
No - 2

Of course they are. Wimp.

Trollheart 06-27-2015 05:13 AM

Yet another triumph as Zep unsurprisingly get the total 6-2 (Did you vote against it Pet_Sounds???)
http://png.clipart.me/graphics/thumb..._172653986.jpg

Pet_Sounds, you're up! Make it a good one! (If you do a Beach Boys I'm obviously voting No. Maybe...)

Trollheart 06-27-2015 05:24 AM

Right, someone screwed up on the count (think it was Josef K), so can I ask you once again as you vote to add your vote and display it, ie Yes from me so thats Yes 4, No 2 etc. ? Otherwise people are going to count incorrectly. I'm pretty sure Zep was a 7-1 but it became 6-2. Doesn't matter in this case but a miscount could end up being important were one of these albums to be a close run thing. Thanks.

Pet_Sounds 06-27-2015 05:52 AM

No, I definitely voted "yes" for ZOSO.

Part of this (for me at any rate) is choosing albums that have a chance of being voted out. So…

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...-_The_Cars.jpg

Chula Vista 06-27-2015 08:07 AM

The Cars

1-0

Definitely a classic becasue it helped define an entire new genre. Plus it's got masterful pop/rock songwriting. And Elliot Easton never played anything less than a perfect guitar solo.

Nope, Batlord and I both voted no. I counted right.

I've actually never even heard that album. Should I change that?

Trollheart 06-27-2015 12:22 PM

Yeah, I did this on CAIHNH and was impressed. Put me down for a Yes.
So we're what? 2-0 for Yes? I'm not sure if P_S is voting Yes....

Moss 06-27-2015 12:43 PM

Yes for the reasons Chula stated.

3-0

music_phantom13 06-27-2015 03:17 PM

Resounding no. Can't stand the singing, sounds cheesy all around to me. I hate the Cars with a passion.

3-1

Josef K 06-27-2015 04:30 PM

I mean sure, it's a pretty good pop-rock album, and obviously it's easily their best album - in fact I'd say it's the only one that's good all the way through - but that doesn't make it a classic.

Yes - 3
No - 2

Pet_Sounds 06-27-2015 04:53 PM

Yes - 4
No - 2

It's almost like a greatest hits album. Absolutely perfect.

In which case they're not greatest hits albums. You lose.

If you think it deserves to be called a classic, then vote yes. If not, plop a no into this thread. Post why you voted how you did for bonus points.

Ninetales 06-28-2015 12:20 AM

ok but like the cars are a classic album regardless of if i like them

The cars are ok

But they aren't great.

Whoever makes this thread can do whatever they want with this answrr

Sounds like a yes to me. Personal taste can influence your choice if you like (see my post on The Who) but you can still vote that something's classic without liking it (see TH on Metal Machine Music).

I thought it was should it be considered a classic, not is it a classic.

There's that good wording I'd be able to do if I was sober. You're exactly right.

All of the above (Ninetales's stuff) could have been avoided if he has just read the OP. It's all explained there.

Anyway, that's another win for The Cars it seems, so it's
http://png.clipart.me/graphics/thumb..._172653986.jpg

which brings us to Music Phantom 13. Off ya go!

Trollheart 06-28-2015 01:47 PM

OK, looks like the Phantom is being chased by those darn kids and can't join us.

Josef K, want to try?

Josef K 06-28-2015 01:54 PM

Sure. Here's one I think is pretty obvious, but I want to see if anybody disagrees.
