Moss 06-28-2015 02:11 PM

Easy yes

Trollheart 06-29-2015 01:30 PM

So that's 3-0. Any other votes or do you want me to call this now and move on?

Chula Vista 06-29-2015 01:47 PM

Trollheart 06-29-2015 01:52 PM

And Sabbath wins.
Stand by for a "classic" nobody knows. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's Mister Frown "John Zorn is God and Cage is his son" Land!!!!!!!!

The Batlord 06-29-2015 04:50 PM

I thought Cage came before Zorn.

It'd be the other way around since Cage is older and far superior.

You think a god is worried about such details??

Also, I know nothing about this album so will abstain.

Zorn is a god, but he's more like one of the lower order gods. Cage is basically Zeus.

My vote is yes since I think this album is truly one of a kind. A lot of punk and post punk records at the time were starting to become safe, but The Pop Group went balls out experimental to incredible effect. The fact that so many of the songs are catchy while integrating ideas out of left field only helps its case. I also ****ing love the vocals on that record, they're very unique. It's held in pretty high regard in post punk circles and it definitely deserves its status.

Moss 06-29-2015 09:09 PM

Have not heard it but now I really want to. Will check it out.

One of my all time faves. Hope you dig it!

Hey Frown, you a fan of David Torn?

Looking at his wiki page, he's produced some good Tim Berne and Laurie Anderson records and did some good soundtracks but I'm not familiar with his work. Any albums I should check out? I swear if you recommend me some cheesy ass fusion I will stab you.

Not really familiar with his catalog. Became a bit of a bud with him via another forum. Cool guy. Figured you might be a fan. His movie soundtrack work is always great.

His work with Mick Karn is especially worth listening.
(The Tooth Mother, Polytown, Bestial Cluster)
And his solo "Prezens" is great.

So we're still on 2-0. Anyone else got votes, or is this too obscure for most of us to vote?

I like Cat Stevens, but I'm not sure why that album would be considered a classic.

Josef K 07-01-2015 08:41 PM

I'm still struggling here. I like Cat Stevens a lot, but I really don't like misogyny - seriously, "Wild World" is gross. At the same time, I think it is a pretty influential album. I'm leaning towards yes but I'm not going to vote either way yet.

I've always interpreted that song as being father to daughter, which makes it less gross. I have no idea if that's how Stevens meant it, though.

I was wondering the exact same thing when MMM somehow got a 5-1 vote for "yes"

And I have NO idea how someone sees "Wild World" as misogynistic...

Moss 07-01-2015 09:40 PM

I never considered that song misogynistic, just read the lyrics, still don't. Splain?

It's so condescending, so patronizing. The first couple lines establish pretty clearly that it's about a romantic partner who's breaking up with him - would you really tell your daughter whom you love that "I've lost everything to you" and say she's broken your heart? - and then the rest of the song treats her, yeah, basically like a child. I mean, please. It's about how people are really mean and this poor, pure, innocent woman just doesn't get it, and Cat Stevens is just trying to protect her from the nasty old world. Like, "Hope you make a lot of nice friends out there / Just remember there's a lot, I'd beware," is such an asinine thing to say - she's an adult and can use her own judgment. Clearly she doesn't want to do whatever you say, because she's breaking up with you.

Pet_Sounds's reading of the song - it being targeted at his daughter - is wrong IMO, but in a way it's spot-on because it completely shows what's wrong with it. Like I said, he has this image of her as a child who's unable to take care of herself. That's kind of awful.

Still a really good album though.

Interesting interpretation. I've always felt it was a sort of cocky proclamation that her life will be worse without him, which I never really thought of as misogynistic. I don't know enough about Cat Stevens in general to be able to make a stance on what he was intending with the song
