Deacon Blue - Raintown

Alright going into this one blind.

Track 1: Born In A Storm (1:32)
Okay is this an 80's album? It sounds like it. Nice little piano ballad if not a little dated. The guy has a nice voice at least.

Track 2: Raintown (3:50)
Okay straight into the next song. Kind of a white funk groove it's a'ight. Those synths are hilarious though they just sound so 80's to me. Like if someone slowed this down, and warped it, this could be vaporwave. I actually don't mind this, dated 80's sounds are kinda fun.

Track 3: Ragman (3:08)
This is a pretty nice pop song. Nothing crazy special, but it's pretty alright.

Track 4: He Looks Like Spencer Tracy Now (3:50)
I like the staccato kind of new agey keyboards I don't like new age usually, but I like certain sound from it. Yeah again this wasn't bad, but nothing insanely remarkable for me to grab on to.

Track 5: Loaded (4:30)
Same thing as the last song to be honest. I'm glad this album isn't too long.

Track 6: When Will You [Make My Telephone Ring] (5:01)
Oh boy a ballad. The gospel backround vocalists are cheesy in a bad, really dated way. I think chorus has been just playing on repeat for the last 2 minutes now or something. You know when people talk about like the stereotypically 80's ballad, yeah this is basically the epitomy of that.

Track 7: Chocolate Girl (3:20)
Okay like country vibe to the beggining. Oh back to the 80's sounding stuff. I kinda like this one actually even though it's SUPER 80's just a really catchy song. That was actually really good.

Track 8: Dignity (3:59)
This sounds like the first song, but with Another Brick In The Wall type guitars. Speaking of which The Wall is another extremely 80's sounding album, it's one of the reasons it's one of my least fav Floyd albums. Idk the earlier stuff just seems more timeless in comparison to the later era Floyd. Sorry, got sidetracked, this is an alright song I'm getting bored though.

Track 9: The Very Thing (3:34)
The song is actually pretty good it's cheesy, but the synths are awesome.

Track 10: Love's Great Fears (3:41)
If you just took the backround synths, and did something with that this'd be a pretty great song. Aw man now it's just overproduced 80's music. Not feeling this one.

Track 11: Town To Be Blamed (5:18)
Why does 5 minutes feel like a huge stretch for something on this album. This isn't completely horrible like I don't love it, but it isn't bad. Man this is a soft song I was expecting another overblown cheesy ballad.

Track 12: Riches (2:37)
His voice just dosent really fit this type of music. He has nice voice, but it just dosent mesh very well with this kind if sound. That was okay.

Track 13: Kings Of The Western World (2:40)
I really don't even know what to say. It's just the same for as all the other songs I didn't care about. The chorus is pretty catchy.

Final Verdict: The most I can say was it was alright, but most of it to me was just very mediocre, and bored me quite a bit.

5/10 (not nearly as bad as Manowar)

That's fair enough. There's a good reason why it sounds 80s: it was released in 1987!

A favourite album of mine and oddly the songs you singled out for particular hate were the singles, so there you go. Thanks for giving it a shot anyway. I'll try to get something less 80s pop for you next.

There were actually a few songs that I was really digging, but overall it's just not a style in super into yet.

Dälek - Absense

I've heard of Dälek before; always meant to listen to some of their stuff, but never got around to it, so I'm pretty excited for this one.

Track 1: Distorted Prose (5:59)
A capella opening. The beat ****ing rules, there's a bass line that kinda sounds like something out of the Aesop book, but then there's this blaring white noise that keeps coming in and out. That was a great opener.

Track 2: Asylum (Permanent Underclass) (5:48)
I'm loving these bass heavy boom bap drums over this industrial noise backdrop. I like his lyricism a lot too, his wordplay is better than what I was expecting. Yeah no complaints here so far.

Track 3: Culture For Dollars (6:43)
There's this drill like opening that I thought was pretty dope. The beat is kinda similar to the rest, wait not anymore. Ah yeah I'm loving this one it has a great hook to it. The record scratches all add to the noisy backdrop because they all distort under the music.

Track 4: Absense (1:42)
Okay droning synths to start off, very dark. Wish that was longer.

Track 5: A Beast Caged (6:41)
I like the "snare" tone on this song a lot. What I love about this album is they give a lot of time to let the instrumental breathe which is missing in a lot of hip-hop. It's why I love Earl so much. I'm gonna have to dig in to the lyrics on subsequent listens because I know he has a lot to say based on what I'm comprehending on first listen. Oh the noise has been growing since the start of the track.

Track 6: Köner (3:56)
Reverbed out sitar opens this up, as well these white noise synths buried in the backround. Just an instrumental, but a pretty well done one. I like the warbling synths here at the end giving this beautiful melody.

Track 7: In Midst Of Struggle* (7:43)
The way the drums distort around the beat is perfect. Oh yeah I can see where acts like blackhandpath totally got their influence from. That one had like 4 minute instrumental coda, again I love that it gives variety to the album, you don't know what your getting with each track.

Track 8: Eyes To Form Shadows (6:30)
I can't even explain how awesome this opening was. I think this is one of my favorite beats on the album. I didn't love his voice at first, but it's totally growing on me. Yeah this song ****in rules.

Track 9: Ever Somber (4:49)
This is definately the most conventional track on the album, more of an emphasis on melody (even if it is droning). It's not really a bad thing, again I like the variety thi a album has to offer.

Track 10: Opiate the Masses (7:23)
I have to find the source material for all the samples on this album. I also need to look up the damn lyrics because it's a lot to take in at once.

Final Verdict: Another great album, and albums like this is why I decided to start this thread. Sure I'll have to deal with ICP today, but it's a small trade off for a thread that has given me so much great music already. This album has a mix of great lyrics, great musical sensibility, and a willingness to deviate from the norm. My only problem was his voice annoyed me for a while, but I got over that for the most part. This us an album I'll be revisiting soon.

8/10 (for now it might change with more listens)
