Seefeel - Quique

It seems that this one is an ambient techno album, so I guess I'm expecting something similar to Selected Ambient Works Vol.1. Besides that I'm going into this blind.

(Also I'm not writing the track name anymore)

Track 1
Nice glistening synths to open the song, and I like the tribal percussion laying down the beat. Nice bassline and vocoder(?) vocals working their way into the song's framework. Sort of just repeating the same phrase over and over, which isn't inherently a bad thing, the problem is this isn't the most interesting loop I've ever heard.

Track 2
Okay this is a little better, loving the texture on that synth. I'm guessing that's a trumpet in the back? Honestly my initial problem still remains, these tracks aren't really moving at all and the loops I'm stuck with leave me sort of unsatisfied. What I love about the Aphex album is that he creates something magical with only minimal loops, this doesn't do that for me. Yeah kinda boring.

Track 3
Why is every single track here like 6 or 7 minutes? They each hold enough interesting ideas for may,be a 2 or 3 minute song, but they just keep going on and on and on. Also why is it the same exact sounds every single song? Same bass tones, same percussion tones, same 3 or 4 synths. Honestly I have nothing to say about the track itself, just read my description of the other two. Funny thing is I ranted, but this is actually the most hypnotic song yet and I kinda like it. Maybe I spoke too soon.

Track 4
Minimal and completely beatless. ****ing bliss, this is my favorite so far.

Track 5
This isn't bad, kinda repetitive, not as excruciatingly boring as the first two track, but not as good as the last two tracks. Again not too much to say about the tracks themselves.

Track 6
I like the timbre on the drums, besides that this one is a little boring. Way too long, way too little happening.

Track 7
Loved the whole minimal electronic intro. There's something so dreamy about the synth being used here, it's almost vaporwave levels of comfort to me.

Track 8
This is nice, reminds me of a track from Demon Days actually called Don't Get Lost In Heaven; they both have this ambient pseudo-dub thing going on that I don't really see a lot. It also sort of reminds me of a much less experimental cLOUDDEAD with dub influence.

Track 9
Purely ambient outro? I'm down.

Final Verdict: I like this a lot actually, it started off rough but I ended up enjoying it. Honestly my favorite parts were the purely ambient songs and my least favorite were some of the "techno" tracks.

7/10

Glad you liked it mate, that's too fun of a record to hate imo (well, if you have taste, that is). The drummer is Paal Nilssen-Love and he is a goddamn monster. He's right up there with Rashied Ali, John "Drumbo" French, and Han Bennink for me, and a pretty big influence on my own drumming style.

This is amazing, love his technique.

Also the next review may not be up for a few days because of homework and other stuff I have to deal with. Either Friday if I have time or sometime Saturday the next review will be up.

Drunken Forest

Seems to be some sort of experimental ambient album. Sounds like something I can get behind.

Track 1 Hisses, clicks, and a banjo??? Don't get me wrong this is quite pretty, but I was not expecting a banjo to lead the song. Bit of droning feedback coming in here. Now a double bass over some minimal synths. Not sure how I feel about that ending; liked it overall though.

Track 2 Just a quiet synth and nothing else in the beginning, oh no wait there a more synths coming in now, and also something being plucked. I guess I can really only describe this as unsettling. I feel like I should be listening to this at night, but oh well. Feels like I'm outside and the whole damn world is ending around me.

Track 3 A violin solo? This album keeps throwing unexpected sounds at me. This sounds like it could be on the soundtrack to one of those new Sherlock Holmes movies, if it had a bit more instrumentation surrounding it. And there are the electronics, I was wondering where they had run off to. That was meh, got a bit boring as it went on.

Track 4 Not much to this one at all, just some glitches and hisses. Now some fake ass bubbling noises and wind sounds. Is that a helicopter I hear? Not for me.

Track 5 Do I hear some blissful droning synths? Aw, they're gone. Don't know how to describe the percussion in this at all. There's too much going on for me to really describe this well. The problem is I'm not attaching to any of the ideas presented here in any way that could be described as favorable. It's just annoying.

Track 6 It's funny I really do like some EAI and Onkyo I've heard, but this is just plain annoying. I can't even really call this EAI either, in fact what would you describe this as? Dark ambient? It's not really like most other dark ambient I've heard, it's much more experimental. Whatever, it doesn't matter anyways.

Track 7 Some sort of cymbal roll at the start? Yo, I hear a sax and I love the tone. I like the double bass in this one too, in fact everything is coming together nicely here. If this is what the whole album was like I might like it more. Lots of noisy electronics and stuttering rhythms at the end.

Track 8 Weird sci-fi electronics and arrhythmic tapping on objects for presumably 5 minutes, fun. Oops, spoke too soon there's a bunch of stuff going on now. I've liked everything since about the 1 minute 30 second mark here, very dreary improvisation that I can get down with. This sounds like Autechtre if they used more acoustic instruments.

Track 9 Again too many things going on to accurately describe it; electronics, percussion, noise, and multitude of other sounds that I haven't the slightest idea what their origin is. Oh I like this part, some sort of chamber orchestra thing going on. First half was near unlistenable though.

Track 10 I don't know man, I really am having a hard time writing about this one. Some parts I like and then others I think are unlistenable and they happen at the same goddamn time. Ahg, it's so ****ing frustrating. The strings are nice. Okay this section I can actually understand, when things aren't flying at me from all directions the album has some choice moments, this is one of them. It almost sounds like their take on doom metal or something. The second part saved me from hating this one.

Track 11 This sounds like the beginning of track 8. WOAH GUITAR?! My ears do not deceive me that is indeed a guitar. Extremely beautiful little moment there between the guitar and banjo, but it ended too quickly back into the abstract electronics. This again reminds me of Autechtre, but nothings really happening. Eh, kind of uneventful closing track.

Final verdict: meh

5/10

And here I was sure you'd really love it.
I'm just going to chalk it up to you not being in the right mood or somethin,g so I don't have to admit to myself that I'm not as great a reccer as I fancy myself to be.

I'm actually sure that it had something to do with it. It has been a bit of a busy day and I some time so I figured I'd give this a go it just didn't click for me. I'll give it another chance at some point.
