Sigh... sometimes I despise my own work ethic. Maybe this will come back? No promises though, I hate writing so much for each album.

Your next review is Aluk Todolo, which I reccd. A review of the Noosefiller/PKWST split would be good though.

Occult Rock

I'm back (actually back this time) and ready to start on these once again. Somehow I've managed not to listen to this yet so here we go.

Track 1
This feels like black metal Swans right off the get go. This huge bright major chord that just will not let up with a blastbeat going on somewhere in the distance, beneath the cascade of cymbals, bass and guitar. It just keeps going while the guitar does some weird effects. Kinda cool albeit a little sparse in the ideas department. The shrill guitar tone has never been my thing and the group is really jacking off on that sound. Okay it's starting to really hurt my ears, and not in a fun metal kind of way. Hey a change in riff, alright this is more my thing. Bassline is dope in this section of the track. And drone out... hmmm not sure about that one.

Track 2 And right into track 2. ****ing cool groove, almost feels like something you might hear in like early 2000's rock radio if it didn't sound like ****. This has a lot of tension to it, I'm not sure if it's building or just staying low; it seems to be fluctuating. They're really just jamming on a single idea at a time for most of this album so far. Kind of a GY!BE build up only to come crashing back down. Lot of post-punk influence on this track which I am totally digging. Let me just note here the drummer is a beast. Banging track.

Track 3 Woah... drone metal opening. This is strange, I'm not used to drone/sludge riffing over a surprisingly grooving beat. Not too much else going on in this one besides a lot of atmosphere from the guitar while the bass is taking up the riff for this track. The track is slowly evolving into a more chaotic sort of monster. I'm really liking this one, probably my favorite so far. Cool psych outro.

Track 4 Oh damn that bassline is all I've ever wanted in life ooooooooooooo. The bass, the drums oh my ****ing face is melting off ohmygod I wish I were high doing this, this would end my life. This track could go on for 45 minutes and never change with the riff and I would be happy. I don't even mind the screeching guitars that make my ears bleed, at all. Oh that guitar line is just gorgeous. Aw changed up, but it's still great so it's okay, but I was really getting lost in that groove. Nvm we back. Yeah by far the best 10/10, album ain't getting any better than this.

Track 5 Another song, another groove to get lost in while the guitar just does its thing. Oh that was a real nice switch; getting a total krautrock feel on this one, even more so than the last one for some reason. It's really more of the same, but I'm not complaining, it's still nice. I sorta wish the guitar would add a couple riffs to this song, every song where it does the guitar always adds to the track. ****ING CHILL IT WITH THAT SHRILL EQ ON YOUR GUITAR HOLY ****ING ****! I literally had to throw off my headphones off at one point it got so bad. The bass and drums rule on this track, but **** the guitar.

Track 6 Thank you guitar dude for actually using a bit of mid in your guitar tone and stepping the hell away from the feedback knob. The rhythm section almost feels a post hardcore while the guitar riffs away into oblivion. Liking this one a lot, it's going through more ideas than I'm used to with a track on this album. Woah crazy one note bassline and simple drums here. Actually doing a lot more for me than I would normally think something like this would. Oh what the hell is the guitarist doing, this is not an onkyo piece stop touching the microphone to make glitch sounds, my god. I swear the guitar is the achilles heal of this band, almost every song it takes away from it rather than adds anything.

Track 7 Like I said before when the guitar player steps away from the effects pedals the band sounds great, but here we go again. This is torture because of the guitar right now. Ah back to the immaculate rhythm section, you guys rule. I wish this band had no guitar player, that'd be so much better. Maybe if it was just mixed beneath the rhythm section. Someone take away this man's envelope pedal (I assume that's what it is), although he might not know what to do with himself itself if it's gone; honestly, at this point I don't care it's awful. Alright no more effects and hey suddenly it sounds amazing again, look at that. As negative as I've been I do enjoy a lot of this track, but I keep switching back and forth from love and hate because of the guitar. And it's back. I can't put the headphones on all the way while that thing is blaring like that.

Track 8 So so so much better. Great riff. Not much else to say honestly. Yeah. Nope never mind back to ****. Nope I'm done **** this.

This is a real shame, I want to love this album so much, but i couldn't even get through the last track the guitar screeching got so bad. My head hurts. **** this album. 4/10

I don't believe you have, that would be very nice though.

Romansy

Alright time for grindy's rec; last time he recced something I thought it was incredible, so I have high hopes for this one too.

Track 1 Some nice guitar work to start this off. I'm already enjoying this a lot. This is like a really spaced out, weird version of the 12 bar blues, really crazy stuff. I assume this is Russian, so I can't tell what anybody is saying at all, it doesn't really matter just as long as it sounds good. The strings are adding a whole other element to this song that really makes it feel just crazy. Woah that's nearly a boom bap beat that just came out of nowhere. Great opener.

Track 2 That's a very similar chord progression to First Day of My Life I just noticed. The bass is so upfront in this song ad it's barely laying down a bass line, just sort of going crazy on the side. The guy singing also has a really nice voice I forgot to mention. SO far this album is pretty simple, but every instrument is really adding something to the mix.

Track 3 So this is just double basses then. I think there are 4??? But yeah it's just a string quartet for double bass. Really well composed, this might actually be my favorite track yet actually. The little glockenspiel hits that mach the bass are just perfect.

Track 4 No clue what kind of organ that is, but it has a strange sine wave bass tone to it. Oh the chords are just beautiful on this one. Feels like something out of a Radiohead almost, maybe not, I'm really not sure what to compare it to, I just know it sounds great. I wish I was there while they overdubbed everything because some of the textures that they're getting are just straight up trippy. Another amazing one.

Track 5 This track is just sort of floating in the ether. Really weird. I have no idea what to make of this one whatsoever. The piano underneath the rest of the track is really freaking me out. A lot of stuff to unpack on this one that just isn't going to get done in one listen.

Track 6 Lmao okay? Just a jazzy e. piano and vibe duet out of nowhere. Idk why, but that really made me ****ing laugh. The track is really nice one it really got started, sort of a demented lounge feel to it. I'm gonna have to learn some of this album on guitar because I'm a total sucker for great chord progressions and this album is bringing it in that department. All the vibes and fake harps are creating this swirling effect that just sucks up this track into a void of these twinkling instruments, that might sound like just pure high talk, but that's just genuinely the only way I can describe it.

Track 7 Some nice piano to start this off, with an almost samba esque rhythm behind it. Holy **** am I getting a rap song out of nowhere half way through this album? I was not ready for this at all. I honestly am just taken aback, if anything I'm confused, I don't know if I hate this or love. It's like both at the same time. I guess I'll just say I like that...

Track 8 Now back to the normal songs after... that. Nice atmospheric sound to this one not sure what all those swells are, but it's nice to hear ambient compositional techniques on a folk album. The strings once again sound great; this album immediately gets even better when the strings are added into the mix.

Track 9 And now a serialism piece? Because that's sure as hell what it's sounding like to me. Solo piano playing through a chromatically composed piece. Now it's getting more song like, but still quite a strange melody. I actually it just stay minimal like this because I don't think adding a 15 instruments would benefit this song in any way. The beauty is in the simplicity. Okay no nevermind this is my favorite song of the album so far, the piano playing is some of my favorite I've ever heard. This is honestly blowing me away. Grindy bless you and your amazing picks.

Track 10 Alright now for one of the longest songs on here. Cool plucked guitar to get things off, and that little crescendo was incredible. Very creepy melody to this one. Lot of strings in the back just sort of doing their thing. I don't know how to describe the weirdness of this track, but it's really eerie and foreboding in this indescribable way. It may have something to do with the partially atonal string section, but I'm not sure. The build ups on this track are really something to behold, it just keeps building up tension and instrumentation until it has no choice but to explode into nothing again.

Track 11 Another short instrumental piece. This time guitar, piano, and glockenspiel or the most part. Fun and silly, it doesn't take itself seriously whatsoever, and the sounds were really nice as well.

Track 12 Feels like different elements of a song are being cut up into this disheveled mess of bits, but still makes sense as a whole. Almost kinda like late Talk Talk. Okay it came together as a whole piece now. This guitar part is really messing me up, it's beautiful but horribly sorrowful. This is another favorite. I've been once again blown away by an album i didn't think would make much of an impact on me.

Once again Grindy you have given me another album that has utterly blown me away. Thank you, I'll be listening to this a lot. 9/10

Awesome review. Really makes me appreciate it from yet another angle.
It's a very lyric-focused album, the lyrics were written by several accomplished russian poets (and are among the best I've ever come across), so I was really curious to see how it'll hold up musically. Glad to see it did well.
Since you have dug it so much, I'd like to rec you another album by these guys. It's a bit different, but just as awesome.
