Beefheart Week!
For those of you who have not read the "What's happening on MB?" thread, we're designating next week as Beefheart Week, and we need reviewers. List of albums below. If you're interested, shout. Ones already claimed are marked as such. We could do with a minimum of four more people, if anyone is interested.
Edit: Albums already reviewed are in Green... Safe as Milk (1967) Pet_Sounds Strictly Personal (1968) Oriphiel Trout Mask Replica (1969) OccultHawk Lick my Decals off, Baby! (1970) Grindy Mirror Man (1971) Frownland The Spotlight Kid (1972) Lisnaholic Clear Spot (1972) OccultHawk Unconditionally Guaranteed (1974) Trollheart Bluejeans and Moonbeams (1974) Trollheart Bongo Fury (1975) (With Frank Zappa) Grindy Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) 1978 Trollheart Doc at the Radar Station (1980) Frownland Ice cream for Crow (1982) Plainview Bat Chain Puller (2012) |
You need to add this
Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart - Bongo Fury |
Done
|
I'd do Bongo Fury as well.
I haven't listened to it for years, don't even remember anything about it. |
Oh come on guys! Over seventy views and three replies, only one of which is neither Frown nor I! I thought you guys loved Beefheart? Nobody else interested? We need a few more reviewers. I'm not even a fan but I'm prepared to give this a go; surely some of you are at least curious as to what Frownland is always banging on about? No?
|
Heard a bit of Ice Cream for Crow so I'll give it a shot?
|
I'd do Clear Spot and Trout Mask Relpica if you're cool.
|
Safe as Milk, please.
|
Alright I'll do Doc and TMR if no ones interested in the latter.
EDIT: didn't see your post. Go for it OccultHawk. |
Cool. Now we're cookin'!
That leaves 5 albums still up for grabs. |
So we just post these as we write them up or is there a certain order about this?
|
Pretty much the same as Manowar Week. From Monday next you can post your reviews, thoughts, whatever, all if possible in this thread or if not at least linked to it. Don't post any reviews before Monday though as that will be the official start of Beefheart Week. You can use videos or not in your review as you please, and they can be short or long, it's up to you. Rate or don't rate, again it's up to you.
|
Beefheart is timeless and having strict rules would only serve to disrespect him. I say we just post reviews up whenever.

I'm gonna break the rules just to prove some kind of point now. If only you hadn't pressured me.
|

Anyway, you're the one applying the pressure. What's the point of starting in the middle of the week? (Are you just kidding here? There's nothing sorted yet, can't you just wait?) |
I'm actually quite serious.

 dude you're so easy. Remember the rule about taking me seriously? I was making a reference to Office Spacegate.
If it were real I'm surprised at how upset it made you. One little rebel and you drop the whole thing? Get a grip dude. |
lol
Nobody quit! Beefheart was actually quite dictatorial concerning his music. He was not in the camp of Ornette. If there are rules to be followed, we should honor them out of respect for Mr. Van Vliet. |
If you two don't kiss and make up, I'll come over there and make you.
And you won't like it. Seriously, this is Beefheart Week, not some chicken**** lounge-thread. I took time off work for this. I bought a new tie to wear while writing the reviews. |
Everyone's still going with it, don't worry. I'll remember not to make jokes in TH's threads anymore. I guess I'll take Mirror Man as well.
OccultHawk better do a good job with TMR. I might end up adding to your review if I'm not pleased. |

Right then: let's go again. How many albums are left? Five? Oh, four I see. Okay. Getting there. Frown, you can make jokes: I'm not super serious. But sometimes you just rub me up the wrong way for the sake of it, I know. I did ask and you said you were serious so I got upset. I'm over it now. At least when I'm joking people know, even if my jokes are bad, as they invariably are. Edit: who's doing the logo for this thing? |
The ambiguity makes it funny for me. It's a very self centered form of humour.
There are four left, I just offered to take Mirror Man. |

It takes fortitude to tackle the biggest daddy of them all. I don't want any maggots compromising the foundation. |
I'll take Strictly Personal, if it's still open.

Office Spacegate. For the win.

Also TH needs to change the Bat Chain Puller (1976) date to 2012. Even though it was recorded around that time, there were conflicts in releasing that album and for years there were several different bootlegs floating around. In 2012 Barfko Swill released the official version. It'd help cut down on conflicting track lists if we went with that one. |

I'd like to make a suggestion here, to ensure everyone gets albums listened to during "their" week. If you review an album by an artiste you're not particularly fond of, but do it anyway, then the person you do it for owes you, ie when it's "your " week they're expected to step up and help you out.
So in other words, let's say Chula does Beefheart but doesn't really want to, when he has his (say) Led Zep week, Frown (as this is basically his week even though I organised it; we all know who's the real Beefheart fan here) is obligated to listen to one, even if he doesn't like Zep. Or Rush. Or whoever. Nobody HAS to of course; it's more a favour-being-paid-back sort of gentleman's agreement thing. I just think it would help when someone chooses an artiste not too many people are fond of, and not leave them looking for reviewers. They could "call in their markers", so to speak. No? |
I also encourage this idea, but I wouldn't make it mandatory.
I'm kind of already following it by planning on reviewing that Manowar album I haven't done yet. It'll be late but I've made a promise. I have a few in mind that I'll post up appropriately. Props to Ori and Urban for the good concept. |
Quote:
And yes, I second the props. Well done you two. Great idea. Let's hope we can make it a regular thing. |
Okay, it's Friday and we're left with three. Since Chula has not responded I'm taking it he's not interested, so you're off the hook for his Zep week I guess Frown. I'll take that one if nobody else steps up. Leaves two then, if we can fill them by Sunday.
Reviews can then begin from Monday and will be accepted in the thread, or linked to it, up to midnight Sunday. Cool with everyone? Oh, and nobody's done a logo yet so how's this? http://www.trollheart.com/tmrweek.jpg |
Again, only a suggestion, but my "Love or Hate?" format for reviewing seems to have become quite popular, and it does make reviewing that bit easier, so if everyone wanted to adopt that for their album(s) it would certainly look tidier and give a better overall picture of what people thought, coupled with eliminating a lot of the actual work of writing an essay. Just an idea; I'm definitely going to go that route myself though.
|
I have no idea what you're talking about.
