Most catalogues go by second name. I can't remember Itunes as I haven't used it in ages and don't intend to, but I'm pretty sure Windows Media Player and Media Monkey use that system. Anyway, I've always done it that way. The library system; can't go wrong.

And Batty, I may not be cataloguing but I am arranging, and I don't want something under one letter that should be under another. Ronnie James Dio: under R or D? (Ozzy doesn't work, for obvious reasons)

Not really. It's just another review thread but done alphabetically. I wanted to review more albums, so this is how I decided to do it.

As it should be.

What does being so restrictive accomplish?

Why would you think it pisses me off? It's just another thing I get to hassle you about.

A is for ...American Football
Album: American Football
Year: 1999
Genre: Emo/Math Rock
Suggested by: a4m

Bet Batty hates this! “American Footall? It's just football, dude! Stupid island monkeys”, and so on. Although there was an EP titled the same before this I'm assuming the antish one wanted me to listen to the album, and as it happens it's the only one they ever had, rather like Hillage and Co. previously. Bit of a confusing start initially, with some guitar twanging, drumming then it stops before the song begins properly. Very melodic I must say, soft vocal line to open “Never meant”, though I feel there's really nothing much in the song. Some nice mournful trumpet in “The summer ends” and there's a nice jangly guitar driving “Honestly?”, though I think it's a little too long at six minutes for what's in it. Trumpet is back with some nice acoustic guitar then as we move into “For sure”, slowing things down, nice dreamy vocal before the tempo rises a little for “You know I should be leaving soon”, which turns out to be a very lovely instrumental.

Some of this almost sounds like an updated Simon and Garfunkel, particularly “Stay home”, which has edges of Joe Jackson's “Is she really going out with him” about it, really nice soft jangly guitar, and the closer then is cleverly called “The one with the Wurlitzer” and it is driven on .... a Wurlitzer. Is it? I don't hear one, but then I'm not entirely sure what one sounds like. Perhaps it's an ironic title. Some lovely guitar work here too, very relaxed and gentle track, more trumpet. Think I may have heard the Wurlitzer there near the end, but again, it certainly doesn't seem to feature enough to name the track as they did, if they're in earnest.

Anyway, a pretty sweet little album overall. Nothing I'd remember too much from, nothing that would make me sorry they only recorded the one or try to seek out their later or solo work, but I wouldn't shy from hearing it again if it came up on rotation. Pleasant, if not terribly memorable. Nothing wrong with that.

Rating: 7/10

This isn't working. If nobody has any objections I'm going to port all the recs I have not yet done into "Love or Hate"?

This thread can now be closed if mods wish to do that, or just leave it to sink under the weight of its own hubris if you prefer.
