How diverse is your taste?

Are you the type who can switch from Nirvana to Katy Perry on shuffle? Or the 'stick-to-one-genre' type?

Neapolitan 12-26-2015 11:25 PM

My taste is pretty diverse, I can switch from The Monkees to the Artic Monkeys in a split second.

Zhanteimi 12-26-2015 11:35 PM

Nirvana to Katy Perry? Easy.

Chula Vista 12-26-2015 11:40 PM

The Bat, Roxy, Neo, Troll, Carpe, Ki, Yorke, Lil, Lisn, Pet, Mord, Plank, DWV, Grind, Frown, Goof, and the rest of you ****ers.

Like I said in my intro...

Exodus to Barry Manilow but same concept.

Norg 12-27-2015 12:01 AM

in my years of listening to music IMO its harder to switch from like

Lady Gaga to Some Classical Jazz Panist

then to like Backstreet boys to Berzerker

CUs the Classical Paino jazz music is hard to digest

also when u go looking for it u start to listen to the same music my great grandpa would be rockin not Grandpa GREAT !!! Godfather

The Batlord 12-27-2015 12:02 AM

Trick question. Katy Perry leads to Nirvana.

Hypocrisy 12-27-2015 12:32 AM

I basically like 70s hard rock like Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Zeppelin, Budgie, Sabbath, Trower, Winter etc. Prog like Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd , Gentle Giant etc. a ton of different types of Metal bands. Weird jazz rock like Zappa, Samurai etc. a bit of outlaw country Hank III and spattering of assorted stuff that is alternative, grunge, rock & roll, progressive jazz and classical. I'm basically a prog and metal freak though. What I don't like at all Is bubble gum pop.

Oh..I also like some old school punk and blues.

1so-static 12-27-2015 02:36 AM

All about Eve to ZZ Top -- Mendelssohn to Motorhead - Puccini to Pink Floyd - Rafferty to Rachmaninoff

Really? I thought you didn't like most of my stuff in plug. :/
Thanks for mentioning me among the best (and worst) of MB. :)

I can't claim diversity on my own. I owe that to all the recs I got from ordinary people to famous musicians. So Thank YOU Frank Zappa http://www.vespastyle.fr/forum/img/s...che_smiley.gif for diversifying me taste by introducing me to the Shaggs. You are so right they are the 3rd greatest band of all time.
Philosophy of the world - The Shaggs

Trollheart 12-27-2015 05:45 AM

Yeah thanks Chula, though I doubt many in that list would agree with you that I deserve to be in it. "Diverse? He hates This Heat and Fantomas!" (Trick question: who's talking?)

But I guess once you don't stick to the one genre all the time (as I used to) and are open to branch out even a little, you can be called diverse. See kids? If I can do it, anyone can! :thumb:

Pet_Sounds 12-27-2015 06:42 AM

My taste is moderately diverse--still not much hip-hop, but I'm getting into it--but I can't switch from Debussy to Siouxsie and the Banshees in a blink. It needs to be done gradually.

Zhanteimi 12-27-2015 06:57 AM

^ I reckon that's more about mood.

DwnWthVwls 12-27-2015 08:19 AM

Kinda depends.. When music is just background noise for video games and driving I prefer to have one genre playing for a bit and maybe switch after 20-30 mins (MAYBE). When I am actively listening to music like in Plug/Dub, I enjoy switching it up a lot.

Ilistentoeverything 12-27-2015 12:57 PM

Well, I'm normally pretty random. It goes something like this.

This

To this

And then this : P

Is Katy Perry to Nirvana the most diverse range you could think of OP?

I consider my tastes fairly diverse. My digital library comprises 267 genres while my vinyl catalog focuses on a few dozen of my favorite umbrella genres.

I've recently started exploring the fascinating world of microtonalism and my current project is to expand my taste to include Early and Renaissance musics (between the years 500 CE and 1600 CE) which will introduce a vast new catalog of recordings into my sphere of interest.

BTW, you might be interested in the unexpected mixture of microtonalism and pop music. Syzygys use an organ playing in Harry Partch's 43-tone scale.

They also do those weird folky instrumental numbers.

Intriguing! I never expected a Partch-casiocore crossover. I dig it!

If you can recognize the value of genres, artists, etc. that others tend to dismiss due to the deficit of initial interest, experience or even just a general lack of awareness, I'd say you might be more "diverse" than some. The trick to breaking into new genres is to find a good crossover point for whatever you are looking into that doesn't immediately alienate.

For instance, while I like most of the obvious touchstone genres, I'm also a huge fan of so called soft/yacht-rock, contemporary (smooth) jazz, AOR and progressive rock: genres that tend to get marginalized or outright ignored by most music-related publications, communities, etc on an annual basis. That's not to say they aren't relevant or that gems don't exist that might appeal to a larger audience: its just that folks get sucked into preconceived notions/opinions by people who never explore any of those genres to begin with. They heard a Journey song one day at the grocery store and decided that all 80's rock music has no value. Or they saw Toto on a really stupid looking Greatest Hits Of The 70's compilation and never bothered to see if maybe there was more to the story of why some of the best musicians on the planet were all in some "soft rock" band together.

One of the fun things about a community like MusicBanter is sharing what you know to help break down ignorance and give others the opportunity to get a better idea of what you love and why you love it. That's probably why I've stuck around for as long as I have (coming up on eight years now), and hopefully you'll do the same. :)

Not by me.

Basil C. Thurston III 12-28-2015 02:22 AM

I don't know about "diverse" but I can find something in almost any genre that I like. That's why music can be so exciting- there is always something to be discovered...looking at my collection, you might say it's diverse if you feel the need to break things down into genres, labels, styles, etc. But to me, music is just music, and there is good and bad, and it's pretty subjective dependent on the listener..

Black Francis 12-28-2015 01:20 PM

My music taste is pretty diverse, i can listen to anything from the Pixies to Frank Black to Frank Black & the catholics.

If you really want to spread your wings you should check out Nirvana.

I never really got into Nirvana, but if you say so maybe I'll give them a second chance. :/

I see what you did there Frownland. Well played, well played.

I remember being perplexed by something a Pixie fan said once, which was he didn't like Jimi Hendrix. Wha...? Joey Santiago cites Hendrix as an influence. Some of my best recommendations come from my favorite guitar players mentioning who influenced them.

According to my phone, I'm the type who can switch from Agoraphobic Nosebleed to the West Side Story Original Broadway Cast Recording on shuffle.

MicShazam 12-29-2015 09:04 AM

Decently diverse, but one could always be more diverse I guess. Then there's how often you listen to what. I span wide, but 80% of the time it's metal, so...
Suzanne Vega to Nile in a second: yes, but most of the time it will be some form of melodic/alternative metal.

CoNtrivedNiHilism 12-29-2015 10:46 AM

I think I am diverse in my own way but compared to some here. My diversity looks about as diverse as Donald Trump.

I still don't like Hendrix! well.. except for 1983 (a Merman i should turn to be) that song is pretty awesome.

^That's the Best. "If 6 Was 9" is fantastic too. God damn "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" as well
