Default copywrite?

Hi, this is the closet forum I can find for this question. I can't play any instruments. I bring the vocal melody and lyrics. My question is I have recorded vocal melodies and lyrics over existing music from a video game. I realize I can't use someone else's copywrite music and say it's mine. I just want to use it in order to recruit some band members off of craigslist, at which time we would create new music, maybe somewhat similar. I'm wondering if the owners of the video game music could somehow own my new songs. I heard a lecture on music copywrites that if you use a sample of a song without permission, you don't own your new song you made, the owner of the sample now owns your new song. My issue seems different since I'm only using it to give potential bandmates my style of vocal melodies/lyrics. Thank you

I think you're fine since you're just trying to use the songs as a base for an example of your vocal abilities. It's not like you're trying to make a profit using VGM as the template

Your question revolves around ownership, but you say you're only going to use it to recruit band members off Craigslist. These are two different dynamics, but both still violate copyright. If you're only using it to recruit band members off Craigslist, then it shouldn't matter even if they did lay claim to the song(s) you created, because you never expected to own the work in the first place.

You could always write the rightsholders -- which involves a lot of minutia -- to see if they will give you permission for the specific use that you intend.

Just be sure to sample someone who isn't notoriously anal about copyright laws and you'll be all set.
