Assuming you mean "overt" and not "advert"...

There is no one definition for art. That's part of what makes it so glorious, or perhaps it is its glory that defies definition. But we can all agree that some art is better than others, though it is often a matter of taste. I guess if people enjoy propaganda, then even that an be artistic for them. Have you seen the North Koreans weep in raptures when they look on a painting of Dear Leader or hear his theme song?

Yep. There's a ton of great art that's propaganda, from Soviet poster art to the fire and brimstone triptychs of Heironymous Bosch to the imposing statuary of ancient Egypt. In fact, most classic art from antiquity is propaganda of one form or another.

Have you seen Christians weep in raptures when they see the Sistine Chaple or listen to Handel's Messiah?

No need for the name calling buddy. I'm not stalking you, I've been posting in this thread since the first page. And I wasn't commenting on the validity of Christianity, I was talking about how much classic artwork is also propaganda by using examples I assumed you'd be familiar with.

Wow, that's some serious paranoia there. There are very few active threads on MB so obviously people posting here will cross paths on more than one. I've also replied to Frownland in multiple threads, do you think that means I'm stalking him?

It's not just that...obviously. It's you jumping from one thread to another to dog me with your virulent objections to Christianity. If you're that obsessed with the religion, I suggest you look into it more. You know, it's okay to be gay these days. You don't have to hide it anymore. Same thing with your Christianity fetish.

I created that thread because I observed you MBers are always referencing (Not Your) Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all over the boards. You just can't keep it contained to one thread, can you?

Huh? I'm trying to have a conversation about propaganda as art. Nothing I've said in this thread has anything to do with any kind of objection to Christianity. I'm simply pointing out that most of the great artwork from most of human history is propaganda of one kind or another. In the west that means a huge percentage of it is Christian propaganda. I'm not saying that to disparage it, it simply is what it is. I still love a lot of it. When I saw La Sagrada Familia in person, for example, its beauty nearly bought tears to my eyes. Just last week I was lucky enough to get to see Bruegel's The Fall of the Rebel Angels in person and was absolutely blown away. Both are propaganda—and propaganda of an ideology I disagree with no less—but I still think they're amazing works of art.

we're all just closet Christians, that must be why we disagree with mordwyr on Christianity: to cover our asses.
