It's the same reason why I prefer rum raisin, and my wife prefers love potion 31.

It seems like you're thinking that dull has something to do with whether music is memorable. Memorability is something different, and it's relative to individuals' experiences, tastes and knowledge.

What folks would mean by saying that one's tastes are dull is that especially given knowledge of one's socio-economic status, age, locale, etc. one's tastes are very predictable or typical.

The more important issue is whether it matters if someone's tastes are dull. I don't think it does. The game isn't to impress other people. It's to listen to music you like.

There's often some good-willed even if misconceived pressure to make sure that people are exploring their options, but even after they do, they might prefer predictable/typical artists. For example, progressive rock is one of my favorite genres, and I've explored hundreds of progressive rock artists, but my favorites are still Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Genesis, etc. (sticking to artists who are non-controversially considered prog). When I list my favorite prog artists, a lot of folks probably figure that I'm not very familiar with the genre outside of the relatively mainstream stuff. That's not true. It's just that the relatively mainstream stuff just so happens to be the stuff I like the most. That's true for me with many genres, actually. I like a lot of obscure stuff, too, but often not as much as I like the more well-known stuff in a genre.

However, when it comes to albums I prefer from particular artists, that's a different story.

I can't see myself getting wasted and being overly loud with a group of equally loud friends to any of this music. So that's probably why people think your music is boring (i.e. not fun).

I have Porcelain on a flash drive with thousands of other songs in my car. When it comes on I FF to the next tune because I don't wanna fall asleep at the wheel. It's a good song, but the repetitiveness lulls me into a trance. Maybe that's what everyone around you is getting at.

Just some food for thought.

Okay I'm drunk so I'm gonna rate all those songs based on a Party Hardy (PH) 1-10 system, where a 10 equals John Belushi levels of party animal savagery, with a 1 being a nursing home bingo event.

* This has nothing to do with a song's quality, just it's ability to make me want to go legs up on a keg.

*Lurgee by Radiohead

I tried dancing to this, but my leg fell asleep. 1/10

*Clocks by Coldplay

I know this might sound weird, but I have seriously never listened to Coldplay, at least not to my knowledge. No real reason why, I just have never cared enough to do so. Not a bad song, sort of like a combination of the most tepid but still good parts of U2 and Radiohead or something, but I ain't gettin' down to this on a dance floor. 2/10

*Bionic by Placebo

I got my beer bong ready... **** this I'm going for some Ke$ha. 1/10

*Porcelain by Moby

So... like... do you listen to anything but adult contemporary for twenty-somethings? 1/10

*You Don't Have to Tell Me Now by Grant Hart

I'm not even a minute into this and I'm already awarding it a PH level of .5/10

*Untitled by Interpol

Okay, so I was right that one time I listened to Interpol. 1/10

*Vapour Trail by Ride

Oh hey! A band I know and kinda like. 2/10

*Pieces by Dinosaur Jr

You have a chance to post a band with some excitement and this sleepery is what you come up with? Not a bad song at all, but... 2/10

*Shining Light by Ash

This reminds me of the indie rock version of Lifehouse. If you don't know what that is then just know that it isn't a compliment. 1/10

*If You're Thinking Of Me by Dodgy

Man I got **** to do. 1/10

*Disorder by Joy Division

I kind of hate Joy Division, but this is actually the most exciting song yet, even if I don't particularly like it, so... 3/10

If you don't care about what people think, then listen to what you want to listen to, cause **** all that noise, but if you're worried that people think your music is boring, then... you have legitimate cause for concern.

I already said it wasn't about the quality of the music, but... there was definitely some actually boring **** in there.

What is boring to one person may be full of excitement to the next. It's entirely subjective and opinionated. Listen to what you like and don't give a Sh** about what anyone thinks of it.
