Just name a genre you want to know more about.

I was going to review Jesus Loves You and I saw in the genres it said American Pimitivism. What is American Pimitivism?

I heard of "American Primitive Guitar" which is what the music by John Fahey is called. But I never heard of "American Pimitivism." Leo Kottke is also noted for playing in the American Primitive Guitar style.

honestly it's something you study and practice regularly to get better at like guitar and that's where the joy comes from

the game itself is frustrating as all hell

I'm a really competitive person though, only really like pvp, I gotta know someone real life is on the receiving end of an ass whooping or whats even the point

So why don't you get into actual RTS games? You know, adult ****.

Don't assume I like cod, I ****in' hate that ****.
I like fps like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Tribes, Team Fortress, Serious Sam, Counter Strike, etc.

I dig difficult games with a high skill ceiling (even if I suck at games), it's just that I find LOL's core gameplay boring so I don't feel like getting good.
I'd rather get good at Bayonetta, DMC4 and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Old school RTS games. So yeah they're multiplayer. I'd love to **** you up but the only way to get them is a collection that doesn't even work on modern computers. I'd be happy to take you out in StarCraft or WarCraft III though.

The Batlord 09-30-2016 08:21 AM

I'll be waiting.

Unreal Tournament 99 is ****ing ace. Too bad all the active eu servers have ****ty settings, mods and ****ty funnel maps and if not only 1 map 24/7, so It's hard to play online. It's for that reason I've played ut2004 and UT3(shut up I like ut3) way more, even if for Deathmatch Ut99 feels best. (Ut2004 wins on content tho, so many maps and gamemodes and mutators to **** around with)

I hope UT4 will get better as it furthers in development.,cause right ow I'd even rather play UT3 to it, it just feels kinda awkward.

Space rock. Everything I've read doesn't describe the sound of the genre. It just says the where the genre stems from.

Thelonious Monkey 10-09-2016 06:11 PM

space rock sounds awesome, tell me more.

I'm listening to this stuff, and I don't see any difference between it and psychedelic rock.

Along with stoner rock Monster Magnet are also considered space rock, so that should give you some idea of just what an arbitrary genre name it is.

Right you are. Disappointed. I was hoping for some really cool music that was taking the technicality of prog and making it very ambient.

Lucem Ferre 10-09-2016 11:57 PM

It's annoying when people make up genres with out having the creativity to make something different enough to qualify as a new genre.

About "American Primitivism":
This is a great sounding phrase for impressing people with your arcane tastes, but I'm not convinced that it's a necessary genre name. What makes me suspicious is that the same two or three artists are always mentioned (Fahey, Kottke, Basho) and their "AP" work can surely be described with other labels, like experimental acoustic folk or something.

About Curry Powder:
IMO, distorted electric guitars are the curry powders of music. If you add them to your food, they are immediately the best thing about what you're eating - but I can only digest them when they are applied to a simple base of rice and vegetables.

Recently I've been looking at some music like that - lots of distorted guitar on a simple base, but I don't know how to label it. I don't think it's heavy enough to be "stoner rock". Any ideas about what I can call it to impress my friends?

I get a funk vibe from those songs. Maybe Acid Funk (As far as I know, thats not a real genre). Though RYM has them both down as psychedelic rock.

This is accurate. There are some artists who are stylistically primitive experimental folk that really nail the genre for me though.

^ Thank you both for your answers and research. How about we go with Post-Stoner Psychedelic Acid-Funk Blues until something more grandiose occurs to us ?

^ I'd be curious if you have some examples you could mention of the top of your head. Also, does early Moondog count as American Primitivism I wonder? After all, a lot of his tempos come from native American Indian culture apparently.

That title seems a bit redundant since most of those genres are heavily influenced by psychedelic rock.

Frownland 10-10-2016 08:02 PM

Sir Richard Bishop and Bill Orcutt are a couplle of the best in the genre imo

Lisnaholic 10-12-2016 06:00 PM

^ Thanks. I should've guessed at Sir Richard Bishop, who I first heard of here, when stp/Stephen posted an album.

Bill Orcutt is new to me and I quite like his aggressive playing; will be exploring this guy furthur. Thanks.

Thought you might like Orcutt, he's pretty Beefheart inspired.

Lisnaholic 10-14-2016 01:59 PM

^ Thanks ! I thought there was a hint of Dali's Car or something in that Bill Orcutt track.
