Along with stoner rock Monster Magnet are also considered space rock, so that should give you some idea of just what an arbitrary genre name it is.

Right you are. Disappointed. I was hoping for some really cool music that was taking the technicality of prog and making it very ambient.

It's annoying when people make up genres with out having the creativity to make something different enough to qualify as a new genre.

About "American Primitivism":
This is a great sounding phrase for impressing people with your arcane tastes, but I'm not convinced that it's a necessary genre name. What makes me suspicious is that the same two or three artists are always mentioned (Fahey, Kottke, Basho) and their "AP" work can surely be described with other labels, like experimental acoustic folk or something.

About Curry Powder:
IMO, distorted electric guitars are the curry powders of music. If you add them to your food, they are immediately the best thing about what you're eating - but I can only digest them when they are applied to a simple base of rice and vegetables.

Recently I've been looking at some music like that - lots of distorted guitar on a simple base, but I don't know how to label it. I don't think it's heavy enough to be "stoner rock". Any ideas about what I can call it to impress my friends?

....

I get a funk vibe from those songs. Maybe Acid Funk (As far as I know, thats not a real genre). Though RYM has them both down as psychedelic rock.

Dude, you didn't miss this right? Cause glancing over Hawkwind is a sin.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.

This is accurate. There are some artists who are stylistically primitive experimental folk that really nail the genre for me though.
