Not metal, metal, not metal. Just fyi...
Zep and DP may not be confined as strictly metal as Sabbath but they are most definitely metal bands. Zep and DP are not only metal but like Chula says they INVENTED metal. Maybe 50% Sabbath 25% LZ and DP each. For Zeppelin, mapping out huge chunks of the future of heavy metal isn't even their greatest achievement but it's one of them.

Your comment is as ridiculous as saying Elvis Presley wasn't rock'n'roll. It's that indefensible. LZ and DP aren't just metal, they ****ing define it.

Just FYI

I honestly don't know how to respond.
Even though we both did respond it actually doesn't merit a response. Do we have to argue with flat earthers? If you don't have that much of a foundation it's almost pointless to continue.

Just didn't achieve anywhere near the popularity and widespread success. But I agree 100%.

I like you more and more with each passing day.

Not that there's anything wrong with that......

Obviously I'm skipping a few links in the chain. A lot of what I type is obtuse afterall.

I'll try to be constructive. Take a step back from The Beatles for a moment and think of music in general. Would you say that after a certain point, the influence of an artist who established genre standards can fade away without the genre disappearing?

The way I see it, we can draw things back to Handel and further for extreme metal, but that reaches so far back that saying that extreme metal wouldn't have existed without Handel is kind of a moot point and starts to get into the area of unconscious cultural cues (the 24 tone scale sounding dissonant to those who grew up only knowing of the 12 tone scale, for example). Music has developed a lot since that time to the point where other more direct influences that are infinitely more crucial to the subgenre's existence. This takes us back to my point about indirect influence becoming very unclear after a certain point, too unclear to assert as a truth. Think if the genre standards of The Beatles that you can see in extreme metal. Now think of the genre standards of (the ultra-ambiguous genre of) extreme metal. They are light years apart despite using a similar language.

Do you understand where I'm coming from?

Nah you can totally influence a genre witbout being a part of it. I'd say that DP is metal though.

Chula: Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are not metal bands. You called them metal bands. That is wrong. They certainly heavily influenced the genre. I feel like we have been over this before.

OH: Yeah so the Beatles are a metal band now? They influenced it obviously so we should be inclusive of them. Talk about indefensible....

**** Handel in regards to metal. Wagner is the man.

He sure as hell set the stage for album art with Nazi imagery.

And he wouldn't have made music like that without Handel's influence.
