Default Top Five Heartbreakingly Bittersweet Songs

Simple idea. Pick some criteria and list your top five heartbreakingly bittersweet songs. For example...

From the 00s:
  • "The Warming Sun"—Grandaddy
  • "Rain, Rain, Gasoline"—Dave Fischoff
  • "Lost Cause"—Beck
  • "Bi-Pet"—Lali Puna
  • "Chicago"—Sufjan Stevens

The criteria.. Hmm, I suppose I'll go with the general theme of loving someone who is fickle/ loving someone who is heavily implied to be a ghost and/or absent.

Each song has a different take of a love affair gone sour. I imagine these songs are from people who were in love but for whatever reason it doesn't work out for them. However criterion for picking them isn't some unifying theme with the lyrcs, it's the music. I think each song is one of the best examples of the music for its category. The music creates the mood and sets the tone for the lyrics.

Flying Burrito Bros. - Hot Burrito #2

Nazareth - Love Hurts

Sonic Youth - Superstar

Gregory and the Hawk -The Oats We Sow

The Rolling Stones - Backstreet Girl

Any song off of Mount Eerie's last record should suffice.

I find myself reflecting on something after the song ends:

Dropkick Murphys - The Torch
ATB - Trilogy
Gary Jules - Mad World
Kutiman - Someday
DJ Shadow - Blood on the Motorway
