Older vs modern production, which do you prefer?

Music is pretty abstract (except for lyrics) so it's naturally harder to put into words than your thoughts on games, movies or books will be. Even many music reviewers out there aren't very good at putting words to what they're hearing.

I think Anthony Fantano (the guy behind the Youtube channel 'The Needledrop') is better than most at saying something relatable about music.

I have found that on nearly all the recent records I've bought, the vocals tend to be hard to listen to, even, to some extent, on really quiet albums with not much instrumentation. On older albums they did a good job of raising the volume of the vocals above the instrumentation, but on recent albums all parts seem to be sort-of squished together into one mass of sound, and as a result the vocals tend to bleed into the background instrumentation and vice-versa. I find myself having to turn up the volume to try to hear the vocals, but it never really does much good because, of course, it also raises the volume of the background stuff I don't want to hear.

I also agree with OccultHawk that digital remasters tend to not sound as good as the originals. They tend to be sort of sterile sounding.

I would say the 2009 Beatles remasters of Rubber Soul through Let It Be are an exception. The depth of sound is better on those than the originals. The recent Bowie remasters seem good too. I've never taken the time to observe any others closely.
