Albums for When You're High as a Kite

I found one thread for this, but it's last post was from 13 years ago, so I figured a new thread was in order.

I highly dig None So Vile and Blasphemy Made Flesh when I'm sober, but god damn do those riffs open up and become epic and perfect after a good bowl. And every time I do Cryptopsy gets even better when I'm sober.

But right now this is easily my favorite stoner album. I don't even really know how to listen to Diamanda Galas normally, but after a few tokes she becomes this untamed banshee spirit of anger and vengeance whose performance leaves me completely and utterly enthralled. She's got mad good ****, but this being a live album with basically perfect production makes this highly definitive. This **** is as terrifying and hideous as it is wonderful.

Frownland 07-03-2017 05:34 PM

I don't know if there are specific albums for me, since pretty much everything sounds better when I'm stoned. I suppose when I'm super high and barely functional, I throw on something safe since I'll know it's good. So...Tim Buckley or something?

That is a very ****ing good idea. I got three days off and looking to get on some ****. But although I definitely have go tos, I love that uncertainty of how an album will hit while baked, followed by the potential revelation when it plays and it goes next level.

Something from Hanatarash?

Mondo Bungle 07-03-2017 05:40 PM

Is this thread kinda like this one here or nah http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...oure-high.html

Thelonious Monkey 07-03-2017 05:40 PM

Man, I just love listening to albums high. I've got into albums I absolutely would hate if I was sober, but being high just makes me appreciate everything about it. I can never find any faults and it makes me wanna go back when I'm sober and listen to it again and again.

She is one of my saviors, so perfect!:bowdown:

The Batlord 07-03-2017 05:49 PM

Oh and obviously any of ICP's classic albums are ace. Also brings me back to when I first got into them and was smoking the heaviest of my entire career.

Damn it. Was apparently looking for that thread.

I usually will listen to whatever I was going to listen to. However, if I'm super throwed and thinking damn I'm so I throwed I need some special music two bands I might turn to are Drudkh and DJ Screw or other Skrewston stuf

Only heard their first couple records before, but about to zone out to Blood in Our Wells. Expecting great things.

Thelonious Monkey 07-03-2017 06:49 PM

Funhouse is ****ing great when high.

Peter Gabriel: Plays Live

Mondo Bungle 07-03-2017 09:24 PM

Basically any album that is cool

Aloysius 07-03-2017 10:14 PM

I'd go MBV Loveless or Cypres Hill s/t. It does depend if you're talking weed or acid.

Me and my best friend once took shrooms when we were both about 25. Immediately knew it was going to be over the top. Got back to my apt. just before the peak and listened to Plays Live about 3 times through without even being sane enough to talk.

Gabriel saved our lives that day.

(think I've told this story before - few more details: bought the shrooms from a friend of a friend of a friend a few towns over. Got to his house, walked in, and he had a gun on his kitchen table along with lots of "stuff". Bunch of pretty scary dudes milling around. Did the deal and got out as fast as possible. We get in the car and are both pretty freaked out so we each swallow a handfull of fungus. Again, got back to my place just in time. I let him puke in our small bathroom while I used the kitchen sink. My "living room" was all of 12' x 12'. Had a killer turntable and speakers though. We spent 5-6 hours peaking like mad and trying time after time to express ourselves to each other and just failing miserably.)

Over three decades later and we can still piss ourselves laughing reliving that day.

For the record, baby Sherri and Linda were out of town with her mom and step-dad on a mini-vacation up in New Hampshire.

I'm going to post a picture - try not to freak out too much. I'm on the left.

Batlord, you like Melvins?

any of their albums would be ****ing amazing high, well it's already overwhelming normally :D

Zhanteimi 07-05-2017 05:23 AM

I wish I knew the music I know now when I used to trip, because I would have chosen music completely different in mood. Instead of something safe like Sigur Rós, Pink Floyd, or Future Sound of London, I would now choose something more avant, more freaky...like Comus.

Been awhile since I listened to that album, but it would be pretty perfect.

Am I the only one who enjoys music less when stoned?

Yes.

Do you find it too distracting or something or do you just not feel as in the mood for music?

That sounds ****ing awful.

grindy 07-05-2017 12:01 PM

Obviously music is ****ing amazing when one is stoned but the enjoyment for me is on a somewhat more primitive, 'woah' level, while when sober I experience music on a much more emotional level and can actually feel maniacally happy or get tears in my eyes.

Interesting. I'd consider emotion to be the more primitive response to music tbh, but maybe that's because I'm a soulless clout. When I'm sober I can pick out why I like or don't like something more easily because I don't get as lost in the music and can pick on the minutiae.

Being an equally soulless clout I agree that primitive wasn't quite the appropriate term.

Frownland 07-05-2017 12:32 PM

I guess all the tracks on Madvillainy after America's Most Blunted is a pretty common stoned soundtrack for me, because I like to throw on Most Blunted while stoning and just let the album run once I'm finished.

OccultHawk 07-05-2017 12:46 PM

I get what you mean, I think. It sort of resembles the beauty of novelty. Like you're just discovering something new about it but if there's a primitivism it's on account of the delusional nature of being high. It might be considered a form of stupidity to feel what's old is new. Sometimes if I'm very stoned I need another distraction besides just music or I'll get nervous and can't enjoy it. My absolute favorite is to float in a pool. I don't have a pool but occasionally I get access to one through housesitting. My taste in music is too esoteric to push on others. Hiking and doing simple chores while being stoned and listening to music works well. I also tend to really get into vegging into music after about an hour into it as opposed to right when I'm coming up. Except at concerts where if I'm unable to smoke when the band comes on I consider that a real infringement.

Acid and shrooms are too much for me to care much about music until I'm past the peak. Weird music sounds weird but it freaks me out because I'm listening to weird music not because the music is weird. Classical music works well while tripping, actually.

MicShazam 07-05-2017 01:18 PM

I guess I'm boring. I never get stoned, ever.

To each his own.

Frownland 07-05-2017 01:25 PM

Getting stoned rocks.

MicShazam 07-05-2017 01:43 PM

Afghan women tend to disagree.

Frownland 07-05-2017 01:46 PM

Do they not use rocks over there?

MicShazam 07-05-2017 01:48 PM

They use stones. It's in the name.

Hmm... no, forget it. I've got nothing.

I think not posting this comment was the only winning move.

I used to smoke to this a lot in high school to the point where just hearing the trippy part at the end would make me feel baked.
