Album title: Paradise
Artist: Anohni
Genre: Electronic/Avant-Garde
Nationality: American but originally English
Release date: March 17
Position in Discography: Second EP; third overall
Fear Factor: Moderate
Familiar with this artist? No
Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No
Average RYM Score: 2.88
First track is almost impressionism, hard to realise it's even there at all, mostly low synth and humming or suchlike. Second we get to hear her voice, which seems to have something of an Alison Moyet feel to it, sort of a tribal idea to the song. I guess what you'd call the real avant-garde comes in with the third track, which has a lot of electronic effects and stuff going on. I'm not mad about any of this but “You Are My Enemy” has something going for it and the closer is nice. Wouldn't be the sort of thing I'd be coming back to check out again though, even from this short example.

Check out more from this artist? No
Check out more from this genre or subgenre? I expect

Album title: The Sick, Dumb & Happy
Artist: The Charm the Fury
Genre: Nu-Metal
Nationality: Dutch
Release date: March 17
Position in Discography: Second
Fear Factor: Critical
Familiar with this artist? No
Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No
Average RYM Score: 2.57
Ah ****! Nu-metal again! Damn, the more I hear of this subgenre the more I hate it and fail to even see its worth. I mean, this is the genre after all that gave us Slipknot and Korn. The album starts out as you would expect, with a blasting drumbeat, harsh guitars and a vocal that sounds more like a growl and scream than singing, though at least you can make out what she's singing, to use the term broadly. Okay, the second song is certainly more what I'd call musical and less savage, and the use of an organ on the fourth track comes across as very incongruous, but it's quickly blasted aside and it's pretty messy till “Silent War”, where we hear that not only can yer wan sing, and sing well, but her bandmates can play introspective guitar when required. I, obviously, would be more impressed if there was more of this, but hey, that's nu-****ing-metal for ya! I guess it could be worse; I've certainly heard worse.

Check out more from this genre or subgenre? If I can help it, no

Definitely. Releasing an album into the fragile ecosystem of the internet without warning can have untold effects.

You'd think they'd know that by now. They really should get a death grip.

I read this is one of the guys from Bright Eyes, whose album I do remember enjoying, I think. Maybe. They're pretty vague with the genre tag here, but this sounds like folk or country to me, and pretty damn good at that. So far. “Next of Kin” is a heart-wrenching song then “Napalm” is a blues tour-de-force. I love everything on this at this point. Oh yeah, this is one great album.
