I checked out that Emika album and it's on my list of music I need to check out more in depth now. I disagree about the vocals. I quite like that side of it and I think it would lose a lot if it was only the orchestra.

Fear Factor: Low Familiar with this artist? No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? Very little Average RYM Score: 3.29 The first of the albums from other members which don't appear on the Wiki list then, this is number one of three from Frownland. This guy seems to have been something of a big wheel in the folk scene of the sixties, playing alongside such luminaries as Roy Harper and John Martyn. Like the opening track, great melody to it, and the guitar and banjo work really well here. I really like “The Mallard”, and there's a cross between Cash and Cave on “Memphis in Winter”. Good stuff. As this goes on I can certainly see the comparisons with Martyn, and given that this guy is now in his seventies, this is impressive stuff. No Familiar with the genre or subgenre? No Average RYM Score: 3.42 The last and only time I tried experimental hip-hop it was Death Grips, and, well, who can guess at what my reaction was? At least this only has nine tracks, and none are too long so we'll see how it goes. Stange opening with a spoken passage from the beginning of the Bible, then the first actual track is pretty good really, very stripped down but it works well. Like the atmosphere on “Stoop Lights” (not “Stop Lights”, no? Fair enough. No idea what stoop lights are though...) - this is good stuff. The guitar (yes, guitar) on “Fondly Eulogizing Sleep” is great; think this is instrumental? Yep. Very nice indeed, and unexpected. “Branch”, however, is a little too discordant for my tastes, but the next one makes up for it: another instrumental, would you believe? And a good one too. What the hell? “Haze of Interference” goes from an angry rant (spit?) to a dreamy, relaxing almost orchestral wave of music with soft, almost breathy singing to take you out. ****ing superb. “This is Not My Stomach” then, sounds like something Frownland or Merzbow would put out; very weird. And a lovely piano piece to end. A very interesting and at times quite brilliant album, and a real surprise for me. Thanks Q-Man! :thumb: Check out more from this artist? Is this the most questions you've seen begin one of my reviews? It is? Do I have a chance of even getting halfway through this? Will I be hitting the bailout button soon? Is anyone surprised that I hate this from the off? Those crazy, frenetic horns: don't you know I hate those so much, Frown? You do? Of course you do. All right, enough questions: let's get down to an actual review. It settles in nicely finally on track two, and I'm a little calmer. How appropriate: it's called “Ceasefire”, and yes, I do feel like I've been battered by repeated salvos of horn and drums for the last five minutes or so. Reminds me of that scene in Throw Momma From the Train, where Danny DeVito wakens up his sleeping harpy of a mother by blowing a trumpet in her ear (hoping the shock will kill her) and she starts awake snarling “Had a nightmare! Louis Armstrong was trying to kill me!” OK, I officially hate this. No way I'm sitting through another – how long? - over fify minutes of this.
