Oh yeah I forgot, if you're gonna throw a country artist up there then go with Townes Van Zandt. I love Dolly for her catchy tunes, emotive singing, and larger-than-life personality, but dear god is Townes the beating heart and soul of nihilistic despair, with far more interesting instrumentation and more solid albums. And he got me into country. "Our Mother the Mountain" may very well always be my favorite country song.

Well, duh, assbag, but you can't listen to a folk singer with a Texas accent who makes songs like "Pancho and Lefty" and not think of country. I highly doubt he made the distinction himself at any rate.
