My vote goes to ABBA. I'm not really a fan of either group but ABBA's music has more energy, while The Carpenters always seemed bland to me. That said, on a human level, I wish Karen Carpenter were still with us. She died much too young, and her parents were absolute monsters.

I also was thinking along the lines of what you were thinking. Karen Carpenter could have STILL been alive to this day if she hadn't died of anorexia. A list of great singers and musicians who died way too soon who could have STILL been alive today.

It is interesting how both groups could make simple pop structures feel so effective, through arrangement and vocal delivery of ABBA and the other group. The songwriting of ABBA is really something that makes the tracks of ABBA very memorable.
