Just cause this is the new Lovecraft thread I might as well say it here, but that Gerald's Game movie you keep insisting I watch for a Lovecraft rec is a Netflix original movie from 2017, right? Cause I know there's a movie from the 80s. So I'm watching the right thing? And if it's not Lovecraftian I'm gonna **** down your throat, Frown.

It's a Netflix original, and while it does have a lot of helpless despair I never recommended it as a Lovecraftian horror film. You should still watch it though bitch.

Back on topic, you probably want some death industrial in your life.

Damn. Still seems cool so I guess I'm in.

Thoughts on The Void?

The Batlord 11-18-2017 07:37 PM

Well whatever the case I'm not quite a half way in and it's pretty ****ing engaging in a big way so who cares, right? A good movie is a good movie EVEN IF YOU'RE A LYING ****.

While it's very loose narratively speaking, I think that Tetsuo fits. There are classics like The Thing and Prince of Darkness, but ja you're right. It's not Lovecraftian at all, but watch Gerald's Game. I don't think I've seen a film convey hopeless dread so well.

You should. You wanna see a Lovecraftian movie? Bam.

And I still got a half hour left of Gerald's Game but I'm going to bed cause I gotta. ****ing good **** though. Fascinated with how this ends and god damn has it been cool so far. Pretty surprised that I only have a half hour left with how much it feels like this movie could go on and still keep me sucked in.

Frownland 11-18-2017 09:00 PM

I was actually considering watching it about an hour ago before you even asked but settled on Beyond the Black Rainbow because The Void looked like it could easily be really ****ty. It's on the radar now.

Anyway this might be the best answer for the OP

Back to the OP.

Lots of Katatonia fits IMO.

grindy 11-19-2017 02:42 AM

Not only because of the name.

Mondo Bungle 11-20-2017 04:56 PM

isn't Gerald's Game Stephen King

MicShazam 11-20-2017 05:24 PM

Ghoulgotha - Gazing Into Melted Night

Nile - Ithyphallic

Make sure to listen until the middle for this one.

MicShazam 11-20-2017 05:27 PM

****, forget about those two. This one is my real rec.

Dir en Grey - The Blossoming Beelzebub

Too Dark Park is damn good. Need a remastered copy.

This one here has some Lovecraftian dissonance flowing under the surface. Quiet, calm-before-the-storm kinda stuff. Would work great for one of the Dreamlands stories too.

I think some tracks in dankrsta's selection of Freak Folk sound pretty Lovecraftian too. They are good at evoking a spooky mood, but as music, I find them a little disappointing; they don't seem to go anywhere. Certainly there are no melodramatic, spine-tingling moments when the horrible truth is finally revealed, as in a Lovecraft story.

(The tracks by Pocohaunted and Fursaxa are pretty good, though not so Lovecraftian. Anyway, dankrsta has kindly put a link to download the lot if you are curious.)

I made this mix few days ago for 8tracks, but inspired by Big Four Bands Thread decided to post it here too. Like I said there, I see freak folk genre as a modern scene influenced by 60s psychedelic jams, especially by more out there freak-outs (Red Krayola, Cromagnon, for example); Sun City Girls/Sir Richard Bishop brand of primitivism; and minimalism/drone of La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, Terry Riley etc...

I didn't make this playlist to be a beginner's guide, but it can serve as one. The mix is more oriented toward mystical, pagan side of freak folk (like being alone in the dark wood). It's interesting to compare it to neo-folk, which is, with its ties to early industrial, drenched in occult; this on the other side is swimming in 'primitive' ritual.

Tracklist

Fursaxa - "Alone in the Dark Wood" (Alone in the Dark Wood, 2007)
Kabyzdoh Obtruhamchi - "Viva Piskadero!" (Estcho, 2009)
Wooden Veil - "Gloom Across the Ice" (Wooden Veil, 2009)
Inca Ore - "Everlasting Fountain" (Birthday Of Bless You, 2008)
Vibracathedral Orchestra - "Ordinary Babies" (Versatile Arab Chord Chart, 2000)
Islaja - "Palaa aurinkoon" (Palaa aurinkoon, 2005)
Lau Nau - "Kuljen halki kuutarhan" (Kuutarha, 2004)
Spires That in the Sunset Rise - "Bells Don't Ring At Night" (Spires That in the Sunset Rise, 2004)
Anna Homler and Steve Moshier - "Sirens" (Breadwoman & Other Tales, 2016)
Pocahaunted - "Ashes is White" (Island Diamonds, 2008)
Paavoharju - "Vitivalkoinen" (Yhä Hämärää, 2005)
Sun Araw - "The Phynx" (The Phynx, 2008)
Badgerlore - "Building a Nest" (Stories for Owls, 2005)
Topaz Rags - "Darker Sooner" (Capricorn Born Again, 2009)
Charalambides - "Strokes" (Joy Shapes, 2004)
The Tower Recordings - "Harmengi - The Tower Becomes A Sun" (Folkscene, 2001)

Freak Folk download

Well when you do, let me know what you think of that scene that you'll know I'm referring to when you see it.

Many of the songs from BÖCs black and white period suggest Lovecraft horror to me.

For example: Screams, Seven Screaming Diz-Busters, Flaming Telepaths and Astronomy.
