Off the top of my head, I'd go for Suzy Quatro for being such a pioneer and for cranking out some good rocking pop, then the outstanding Patti Smith, for taking chics-with-attitude to a whole new level.

Honourable mention to Susan Tedeschi: if she's good enough for Butch Trucks, she's good enough for this thread:-

Edit: Thinking about it, I generally prefer female musicians when they do softer material, with a bit of those nuanced feminine vocals. Not so many ladies can convincingly do the essentially aggressive sound of rock imo. Does that mean I should go to gender-equality counseling?

^ Good point, elphenor! Never really thought about that distinction before. Thanks.

Except that the number of women who do rock is far less than the number of men, unless you'd like to do completely away with affirmative action cause it's insulting to African Americans to accept the concept of racist hiring policies that would otherwise insinuate that their lack of wealth is because they're genetically inferior.

But yeah let's totally ignore the contributions of women in rock by equating them with men and pretending that there isn't a disparity for whatever reason.

You know, Batlord, I'm kind of disappointed in you (not because of your last post-I'm totally with you on that). But you're the resident metal head here and you didn't mention Lita Ford?
