Who's the greatest female rocker ever?

I haven't seen a thread on this yet though I sure some joker is going to find one in the archives from 1965. Anyway, I'm curious which female (musically speaking though I'll admit Pat Benatar was hot) rocked your world, literally.

I would have done a poll but there are so many great women musicians out there. I can think of Patti Smith, Benatar, Joan Jett, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Aimee Mann, and Sam Phillips to name a few. I guess you can also include band leaders like Kim Deal (Breeders) for example.

Anyway, who out there pops your cherry?

Kate Bush definitely.

I really like Sheila E too.

Trollheart 11-22-2017 05:00 AM

I think I'd go for Suzi Q. First female bass player to make it big, plus she was a crush of mine. ;) Just so different to the female stars of the time. Kate too, and I'd have to include I suppose Tina Turner as well, given what she went through and how famous she became despite that.

Considering Kate Bush's musical style and Sheila E primarily being known as a member of George Duke's jazz band, I wouldn't consider either of those ''Rockers''

Even so, I'd probably say either Benatar, Joplin or Nicks

They made some pop music.

There is sufficient 'rock' there imo.

rubber soul 11-22-2017 05:22 AM

I missed Suzi Q. She was awesome until Happy Days ruined her.

I guess I should mention my favorite is the legendary Patti Smith.

Akai 11-22-2017 05:24 AM

Also forgot Weymouth

MicShazam 11-22-2017 06:37 AM

Of the ones I think of as being first and foremost a rock artist, PJ Harvey for sure.

rubber soul 11-22-2017 07:07 AM

PJ Harvey is probably second to Patti Smith on my list. She seems to get better with time too. I love Let England Shake especially.

Psy-Fi 11-22-2017 07:12 AM

If we're talking about genuine "rockers"...

OccultHawk 11-22-2017 09:10 AM

Nods to Patti Smith

I guess Kim Gordon

Frownland 11-22-2017 09:15 AM

Lydia Lunch

How did I forget Grace? I'd kill for this woman.

You want pipes? 1:58 baby.

question is stupid though and you might as well as who the greatest male rocker is supah vague

It is very meaningless yes but Lydia was the only option imo although Grace Slick is one hell of a contender.

OccultHawk 11-22-2017 11:05 AM

Considering women make up half the world it’s amazingly uncompetitive.

What's so stupid about the question? Women have been historically short changed in rock n roll. Maybe it's nice to give some credit to their contributions.

And anyway, what do you consider a good question, o great one?

Killer version of that song.

The Batlord 11-22-2017 11:19 AM

Why would I want to listen to a hard rock song played on acoustic guitars? It wasn't a song meant for acoustic guitars. They have any number of other songs that would be fine acoustic but that is not one of them. That just sounds like they were bored and having a laugh.

Always cool to hear artists "unplugged" to see if they really have the chops.

Plus, in this case, it was obviously foreplay......

No it isn't unless their sound can be translated to acoustic, otherwise it's just a self-indulgent gimmick. The idea that acoustic somehow makes music more legitimate is why anybody cared about hair bands doing MTV Unplugged nonsense.

Or maybe it's just a lot of fun? Having "been there, done that" I can attest that it's a blast for all involved.

I can believe it's fun for the artists who are doing something different, but it's clearly not a blast for listeners with common sense.

It's just fun. Back east, during the 'large group of friends' party days, I'd have been strung up if I didn't show up with an acoustic.

Snapshot: a few dozen folks, all sufficiently liquored and budded up, sitting around a campfire and belting out Hotel California at the top of their lungs while I strum the **** out of my guitar trying to keep up with the volume. Song ends and everyone is smiling and happy.

Good, simple stuff.

Because you're white enough to think that you can end racism by voting for Obama.

Surely you don't think Batty could or would drag himself out of his pit to actually go and vote???
