And that's what I need for a ten. So I'm giving this album a nine. Have at me, fiends.
Talk about "overrated." After I heard this album realised I overrated "When the Kite String Poops." Because in my opinion it doesn't make sense for this Ziggy Stardust ... to be a 10 while WTKSP is a 7. That only a three point difference, and I think the spread should be more like a difference of five points or more - just my opinion.

I understand not every song is a 10/10. However songs like "Starman" and "Hang on to Yourself" pulls the rest of the album up to 10. Right or wrong, nostalgia played a factor. Bowie was one of the first music artist I liked. He had a knack for picking good guitar players. More often than not Mick Ronson's talent is either overlooked or under appreciated. I really like Mick Ronson's guitar playing on this album so I am voting 10 for him too.

Judging how the poll is trending this album deserves the rating it gets.

I seriously hate having to bring my old age into any discussion. I really do.

Ziggy Stardust - 1972.

A Les Paul is such a beast of a guitar. It's uncomfortable, heavy, and maybe the least ergonomic guitar ever designed.

But that ****ing glorious ****ing tone.

Peter Green, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Jimmy Page, etc. etc. etc.

On Ziggy, Ronson carved a whole new Les Paul role. Dial down the gain a little, cut back on the reverb and delay, and don't dig in so hard. And Scott captured it so perfectly.

If not every song is a 10/10 then I don't think the album can be considered a 10: it can't be 'pulled up to 10' if every part of the album is not platonically perfect. I'd argue that 10/10 is literally impossible, and I think that people underestimate how amazing, say, 8/10 is: there is a well known fallacy wherein people vote from 7-10 instead of from 1-10. I've seen a few posters say things like 'it's solid but not amazing' and then give it a 9, a huge mismatch. That language suggests a 7 or so IMO.

My 2 cents

I don't relly like nitpicking things like that, but to me what you're talking about would apply more to the % scale. 10/10 doesn't communicate perfection as much as 100% does. 10/10 means it's great. A classic. Very, very strong. Amazing... Not necessarily, literally perfect.

I mean fair enough, and most in this thread seem to agree with you so I guess I should/will leave you all to it. It just makes no sense to me.

I get what you're saying and I've had this in the back of my mind while reading the various "MB Classics" ratings.
It's as if the ratings were logarithmic (emotional) rather than linear (analytical). A 10/10 should be an extreme rarity
that would warrant a kind of thesis to back up its glorification. My rating was meant to be the equivalent of a "very good +."

I'm not mad. I just didn't know whether I was welcome here. Believe me, you're really not worth it.

Anyway, yeah, I gave it a 10/10. I only rate Hunky Dory higher as far as Bowie albums go and the influence Ziggy Stardust had in rock n roll is pretty much insurmountable.

Up to yourself, Blank, of course, but if you wanted you could replace the ratings with just results the way we do it in the album club: Loved it, Liked it, Hated it etc. Might make it easier for people to rate. Then the more Loved it you get the better the chance the album has of being a classic. Or not. Just a suggestion.
