Not bad rubbah soul, not bad at all. Anything with especially groovy basslines and some creepy organ is gonna make me smile at least a little. Not a 60's girl band aficionado here, but 'Narcissus' and a few other tracks remind me of groups like The Free Design, sans the Carpenters-influence, and 'I Can See It In Your Eyes' is probably the best song here overall as far as the hooks and harmonies go.

I could see myself hopping in the sack with this.

8 out of 10

What a very odd attitude.

God damn you, Rubber Soul!

MUAHAHAHAHA!

Actually, the response was beyond my expectations. I'm a little shocked (pleasantly obviously) myself. Thanks everyone.

I'm actually going to buy it. And listen to the rest of their catalogue, whenever.

No not really. It's basically psychological conditioning. For instance there was this one time I inquire an opinion of ABACAB from a Genesis fan anticipating a positive response. Thinking it would be an ice breaker that would lead into more in-depth conversation about Genesis. So long story short, I came home from work logged onto MusicBanter album looked to see if there was a reply only to stumble upon and read the most full-tilt disgruntled-employee-gone-postal review of an album that I've read in my entire life. After I read through it all and I had gas reflux and an angina attack all at the same time. So to avoid such painfully awkward situations I tend to be reluctant to speak about my favorite bands or albums. This applies on the music boards not the journal section where no one reads that stuff anyways.

It seems as you were trying to predict this album was going to tank, and the only two people who would like it would be Ori and I. But (as of now) it has six 5/5s!

Are you making a Dum Dum Girls reference in The Like thread? Have you no shame?

It is a great song but my favorite track is Like It or Not. It sums up their legacy in that one song. I think that track could fit on any album prior to Abacab and still feel like it belongs there. I think it would fit perfectly on Duke and work well with the concept of the album.

A thought just occurred to me: Funny how Trollheart is alright when The Like can totally change their sound for this album, but Genesis can't evolve their sound from album to album and they are supposedly his favorite band.

Well now that just sounds like you either can't take criticism or feel your artists can't stand it and you can't defend them. How many times have people shat on Marillion and Bon Jovi, but I'll continue to defend them forever. I don't care if people hate them. I even like some U2! And if you'd seen past your reaction to my view on Abacab then yes, we could have had a good Genesis conversation, but you decided that because I hated Abby (and I do) that there was nothing more to be said. You don't seem to like it when people express a differing - often wildly differing - opinion to yours. This happens, and you should try to get used to it. It's a bit stupid, in my opinion, to huddle in a corner and say no I won't discuss my favourite band cos you're mean to them. But whatever, you do what you want to do; just know that not everyone will have the same opinion you do of every album or every band, and that's something you should learn to accept.

Yeah, if you check back this has been addressed many times already. I suck at prediction. Or do I? I predicted I would ... Anyway, on this occasion I'm glad I did.

Meh it's all right but I want my Genesis prog, not pop.

I actually agree with this. It's my favourite on it too, although that's not saying much. Abacab the album is just above the debut in my list of favourite Genesis albums, and the debut is right at the bottom of the heap.

This is a ridiculous statement. I know nothing about The Like, so how could I know that their sound changed for that album? Learn to logic.

Actually, the Like didn't change their sound all that drastically. Their first album, which was actually five years earlier, didn't have the mod girl sound elements that Release Me has but Release Me didn't venture away from their basic sound which is basically sunny sixtyish pop. They are kind of like the Beatles or REM who would change their sound without losing the essence of who they were. They weren't like Genesis who basically are two totally different bands (Peter Gabriel vs. Phil Collins)

I'm a fan of various 60's pop/rock/soul girl groups like The Shangri-Las, Ace of Cups, and The Supremes. This wasn't bad but the attempts to capture that sound just didn't quite register with me. Some of it sounded rather good and some of it was just meh to my ears. Most retro groups fall short of the mark to me, though, so I wasn't expecting to be won over by this album. I almost always prefer to listen to the real thing when I'm in the mood for a blast from the past.

Good but not great. 6/10
