Default What Sucks About This Artist?: Opeth edition.

Does anyone even care about Opeth?

They seem to always get endless praise among metalheads and people who listen to prog etc, but I'm not sure I've noticed much talk about them on MB.

What sucks about them is obvious. They're unfathomably boring.

I like them more than I used to but they're the kind of group you only need one album to listen to whenever you get the itch. They just do the same damn thing over and over and it's still a gimmicky thing that they do.

Unnecessary cleans and lame DM growls. They have that modern prog syndrome where they think that playing in 7/8 is the same as actually being progressive. They hang out with Steve Wilson too much.

The growls are actually one of the best parts. Akerfeldt has a voice that goes with death metal but can work with non-DM.

Nah, it's flat and canned. I'd call myself a fan but not for that.

I feel like his growls lack ferocity (feels stiff and forced, like his clean singing) and are very one note.

What is it that you like about the band?

They generally have good guitar work and employed interesting song structure with their early work before running it into the ground.

I feel like they overuse the "sudden quiet section!!" / "sudden death metal!!" dynamic, but I admittedly haven't listened all that much to their first few albums.
