MB Bowie Classics

Expanding further on Blank's idea (these threads will always carry a "Copyright Blank, 2018" tag) I thought it might be a good idea to do this. Bowie is one of the very few artists everyone seems to be into, and know well, and we're just past the second anniversary of his passing, so why not? The classic or otherwise status of each album doesn't matter that terribly much; the important thing is a chance to get us all talking about Bowie again.

My plan is to go through the albums in order chronologically, and I probably won't close polls the way we do in the other threads, so people can vote much later on if they still want to join in. But I think maybe it's time we all got a chance to express our love and respect for this unassuming Englishman who changed music, and so many people's lives around the world, and remind ourselves why he was and is such a music legend.

Who's interested?

Cuthbert 05-13-2018 07:49 AM

I'm in.

He is quite popular on here but some aren't really fans

The only artist I think I've seen who everyone likes is Black Sabbath.

Anyway definitely #in

Black Francis 05-13-2018 09:30 AM

I'm not a fan, but it would be a chance to maybe become one. Or maybe it will further cement my being a non-fan. If people can deal with that, I'm in ;)

Seriously though, go listen to some ****ing Sabbath. What the **** is wrong with you?

MicShazam 05-13-2018 10:00 AM

Sabbath is like early automobiles. An important evolutionary step, but things have moved on since. I'm joking somewhat, since I think some of their songs were really good, but can't say I ever listen to them much. A good intro to metal - like Metallica and Iron Maiden. Wouldn't call either of them essential listening if you're already deep into the dark waters of metal.

Go on YouTube and listen to Symptom of the Universe and Supernaut immediately! Well don't have to do it right now but I recommend it.

I think all three are probably essential listening.

Sabbath
Maiden
Metallica

In that order.

There can't be many people who are into Metal properly who haven't heard albums from these guys anyway.

I don't know what Francis has heard when it comes to metal, but I imagine him to be far from a newbie to various sorts of genres and obscure bands.

There's not going to be any eye opening qualities to either of these bands - not unless you're new to metal.

Maybe it's just because I think of Sabbath as more of a band that's important to the genre than as a great band on their own.

Cuthbert 05-13-2018 10:19 AM

I think they are both.

I know most of the big names in Rock but most times idk their discography. Ppl can tell me all day *iconic band here* are legendary and i won't care but if they show me a song and i dig it i could start to understand where they are coming from.

Btw MLM, those Sabbath tracks you mentioned were 🔥🔥🔥

Totally agree. It shouldn't matter what the status of a band is. Just gimme some good music.

Trollheart 05-13-2018 10:44 AM

All right, I'm just going to go ahead and kick this off with his debut before this becomes the Sabbath/Maiden thread. :finger:

I don't usually refer to bands as legendary. Most bands I personally feel don't deserve it. Sabbath does.

Id call Sabbath the Elvis of metal. They popularized the genre. So legendary status is something they have.

Yeah. **** Metallica and **** Maiden.
Sabbath rule because their music rules. The historical importance is just a cherry on top of an already deliciously kickass sundae.

Cuthbert 05-13-2018 11:36 AM

So are we discussing each of his albums then?

First one isn't great. One or two OK tracks.

A bit crap tbh.

Trollheart 05-13-2018 12:11 PM

Separate thread now in play.

Trollheart 05-13-2018 12:58 PM

Question: do you guys want to include the live albums? Many of them are feted in their own right, so, should I include them? And is one a week ok or do you want more regular threads? Yes, that's three questions, I know. You think I didn't know that? All right, that's four questions now. Yes. Are you keeping count? Five questions? I must say, when I started this thread I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition! (Feel free...) :D

Trollheart 05-18-2018 05:10 AM

Is anyone else making polls, asking for them to be public (ie everyone can see who voted which way) and it not happening? I've done this with both the Bowie albums and the Metal ones, and each time all it shows in the poll is the vote, not member names. Is this not available any more, is there a glitch, have I slipped into an alternate universe again? :yikes:

Trollheart 06-02-2018 09:08 AM

For those worried, I have not forgotten this. MB Bowie Classics will return on Monday, with this:

Tin Machine, guys? Yea or nay? Do I include those two albums on just move on?

In my eyes, they basically sound like Bowie albums and they're part of his development as an artist. Worth noting that apparently only the first of those two albums is on Spotify.

I vote them in.

Trollheart 06-11-2018 10:26 AM

By the end of this week we'll be done with all the Bowie albums. Though some have engendered less debate and interest than I would have hoped, there has been decent discussion, and I wonder if anyone is interested in doing another of these, and if so, what artist would you suggest? Let me know if anyone's bothered.

MicShazam 06-11-2018 12:03 PM

I'd totally do another.

It's been interesting for me, since I didn't really know much about his music except his hit songs and a few albums. If we're doing another, I feel like it should be someone with a fair amount of variety in the discography - otherwise the albums would blur together after a while for those who don't know the artist in question already.

Just a few ideas for artists I'd probably have fun with going through in the same manner:

- Michael Jackson
- Depeche Mode
- Bob Dylan (I was going to try and get into his music anyway, so...)
- Kate Bush
- PJ Harvey
- Roxy Music and / or Bryan Ferry
- Prince (I don't know... he's got soooo many albums...)
- Radiohead
- Beck (I don't know much about him, but... why not?)

Cuthbert 06-11-2018 12:11 PM

Kate Bush would be good. P has got way too many albums and also there wouldn't be many guys on here that would be interested.

Radiohead, Velvet Underground, Beatles, Outkast, Madonna

Decent shouts because there aren't too many albums in these discographies like with Bowie and most of the forum will be familiar with them all. I was going to include Wu Tang but there are too many albums if we include solo releases.

Trollheart 06-11-2018 12:16 PM

Some good shouts indeed. Kate would be one of my picks, though I did do her discography not that long ago in my journal (or maybe I just started it; can't remember). Prince would be good too. I wouldn't be too interested in Jackson - can see most/all of his stuff being quite similar. I'd be into doing Springsteen, though I doubt anyone else would, Waits or maybe Johnny Cash.

Anyway, let's open up a new thread and see what shakes loose. I'll post these suggestions in it and we can see who's interested if anyone other than us.

MicShazam 06-11-2018 12:19 PM

Yeah, I know that if people don't know these albums already, it's not happening.

I probably wouldn't want to put time into getting familiar with all Velvet Underground, Outkast, Beatles and Madonna albums tbh.

Cuthbert 06-11-2018 12:22 PM

VU only have five
Outkast have six

Though I guess if you haven't heard any of them it might seem like a chore. But then maybe that's the point of these things, discovering new music.

That shouldn't actually be true though. The idea is, first and foremost, to generate music discussion, primarily of course around the artist in question, but also to allow people the chance to listen to albums by that artist they may never have heard. I've heard of nothing of Bowie's output from the 90s or early 21st century, so I'm glad to be able to have an excuse, as it were, now to listen to them.

Anyway, I've opened a new thread so let's have any further discussion there. Thanks.

Frownland 06-11-2018 12:24 PM

The VU would be cool but it would involve listening to the godawful Yule albums.

Hard pass on most of these tbh.
