Question What's wrong with rock being LOUD?

I was viewing a thread on another forum where people were arguing whether Johnny Cash's version was better or worse than the original NIN version. One gal said that NIN was basically "the biggest piece of **** put together for shock value ever". I didn't agree, but I still respected her opinion. Then, out of boredom, I looked to see what other bands she posted about. Though I still respect her right to her own opinion, here's where I had to laugh about any of her "opinions" from then on. Apparently, she liked Good Charlotte and Linkin Park and the hardest thing she listened to was 311. In my eyes, I could retranslate her earlier statement to say "they're too loud and unconventional (MTV poppunk-numetal-emo-mellow clone garbage)". I half couldn't help but to wonder if 50 Cent is on her fave list.

Not that I care, just that rock music is supposed to be LOUD. Partying, raising hell, blah. Not to sound "immature" saying that, but a lot of this new crap is just ****. The only thing aggressive about it is that it makes me wanna smash my stereo when I hear the whiny crap everywhere. I'm probably babbling, but thought I'd post this.

Wanna know something funny? My friend doesn't like System of a Down. The only reason he doesn't like them is that, get this, they're too hardcore for him. HAHAHAHA!!!!! I love it!!!!

Play him some Morbid Angel or Emperor. Heh-heh-heh. For real, though, the hardest thing I listen to now is White Zombie and Primal Scream, though it blows Nickelf*ck, Green Dorks(ay) and Puddle of Sh*t clear out of the water.

I disagree with the point that rock music is supposed to be loud. My own opinion is that rock is all about the energy it brings, not so much the volume of the music. But I also think that the sound of a loud, distorted electric guitar is overrated.

To be fair the Johnny Cash version of hurt is far superior than the NIN version.

I listen to ALL types of ****. It's just that now all you hear everywhere is clones of some whiny pop-punk or nu-metal bands. I know there are different types of "rock". Hell, I love Depeche Mode and Pink Floyd and David Bowie, Willie Nelson. But there aren't enough mainstream bands that have the old addage "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" or bands that really pump you up or are HARD ROCK. It's all this mellow soundalike garbage by twenty billion whiny clone bands whom I can't tell apart. Not a whole lot of rock with BALLS has been pushed since the 90s ended.

I have no preference. I like both. I just brought that up because of the girl's comment.
