I don't consider this a comeback album at all, since it neither came after a long absence, nor after a series of bad records.
For people who didn't like The Next Day at all, I suppose it's what it is.

It didn't come after a long absence but, as far as I'm concerned, it did indeed come after a series of mediocre and, in some cases, bad albums.

I see Blackstar did get a couple of fours at least. Come on, someone has to hate this album

I'm certainly not one of them. It is a sad swan song to be sure. I believe Bowie knew he was dying when he recorded this album and this may be his most introspective album ever. It was certainly his most moving, imo. Favorite songs are Lazarus, Blackstar, and I Can't Give Everything Away, a great and poignant way to end this album.

So where do I rank this album overall? Well, it's certainly the best record of 2016 and I'd probably rank it third for Bowie behind Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust. Yes, it's that good.

10/10 (The Word has spoken )
