MB Artist Classics : The Cure

Time to kick this off then (nice little topical World Cup reference there!), and you all know the deal. I'll leave polls open for one month, so that if it seems you're being swamped in threads and albums to listen to, you can rest easy knowing that you have more than enough time to listen to them. I had originally intended to run a Bowie album each week, but felt that interest might fall off, particularly with the less interesting (to most) first few albums, so I ended up doing one a day. That seemed to keep the interest going, so the plan is to do this with all future artists. If you feel it doesn't work out, let me know.

As per usual, Blank's rules apply: votes for albums won't be counted unless you write a little something about the album in question, and any album achieving an average score of 8 or above will be elevated to the rank of classic.

Any general discussion about the Cure can be posted here; try if possible to limit discussion of each album to its own thread. Not that you reprobates will listen to a word I say, but sure, it's worth a try. :D

Okay then, let's get started!

OccultHawk 06-18-2018 08:41 AM

I’m so glad there’s finally a cure. My dick is about to fall off.

Trollheart 06-18-2018 08:43 AM

Yeah but the cure is worse than the disease!

Classic Hawk.

Oriphiel 06-19-2018 02:22 PM

I've never listened to The Cure.

MicShazam 06-19-2018 02:36 PM

I haven't either - not to a degree that means much at least - so all I can remember off the top of my head is one song.

Trollheart 06-19-2018 03:18 PM

I heard I think it was Seventeen Seconds? And maybe Pornography. And of course I know the singles, but that's about it.

Key 06-19-2018 10:39 PM

Always wanted to listen to them but I never have. I don't even really know what I'm missing not listening to them.

rubber soul 06-20-2018 01:47 AM

I've heard several Cure albums (had a couple in my collection but can only really remember Seventeen Seconds). Will get to these guys when I complete the Bowie comments.

like saying you never listened to The Beatles, curiosity has to get to you eventually

It's one of those bands that fall into the "eh, i'll get to it eventually" category. Mostly bands that I've heard of, have heard they're good, but I have no interest in at the moment. The Cure has been on that list for quite some time.

I've also never listened to The Smiths.

rubber soul 06-21-2018 03:51 AM

I have to admit the Cure has been kind of a meh band for me too. They certainly have their moments but I'd probably would prefer classic Siouxsie over classic Cure.

Zhanteimi 06-24-2018 09:03 PM

I've listened to all The Cure's albums, but Disintegration is the only one I've kept in my collection. It's the only one that resonates with me.

Trollheart 06-25-2018 05:48 PM

Is anyone* even bothered about this? I see 12 replies for the debut album and all of one for the second album. No point in posting albums if nobody* wants to talk about them or vote for them. Let me know if the interest has flagged already. Personally, I don't much care to be honest.

* other than elphenor

MicShazam 06-26-2018 12:26 AM

I'm a bit overburdened with other things at the moment.

I guess I'm not exremely interested in going through all of their albums either. Hard to say. Right now I don't feel much like doing anything like that. Got some work/life stuff hanging over my head.

The Cure are a bit underwhelming. They're very much a "you had to have been there" kind of band. I was there, and I still don't care.

MicShazam 06-26-2018 12:35 AM

I liked the first album a fair bit, but I don't know if I'd ever really become a fan of the band. Never say never, but there are other bands I'd wager would be more worth the kind of time investment it takes to listen to a whole discography.

I'll get to Seventeen Seconds today. Now that I've done the Bowies I can work on the Cure. I have Seventeen Seconds so all I have to listen to really is the first album and I already know some of the tracks off that one too.

Frownland 06-26-2018 08:52 AM

The VU

MicShazam 06-26-2018 08:59 AM

Yes, do the VU. I promise not to ruin the scores with my participation.

rubber soul 06-26-2018 09:04 AM

I've got an idea since the Cure may not be getting the traffic Troll wants. Why not everyone who wants to be involved with this nominate a band he/she may want to see reviewed. It would be set up like the Album Club in that sense. Everyone in the core group would have to participate whether they like the band of not. The only real rule otherwise would be the band would have to be well known for the most part. In other words VU or, say, Led Zeppelin, would qualify but some group called Flesh Eating Zombies who maybe three people have heard of (and I'm not one of them) would not. Anyway, what do you guys think? What do you think, Trolls? :)

Key 06-26-2018 09:06 AM

That's why I keep to 4 polls per week. Too many gets overwhelming.

Frownland 06-26-2018 09:08 AM

That would have equally low traffic.

Let's just finish this out then pick another artist: https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...-classics.html

Trollheart 06-26-2018 05:10 PM

Nah, someone else do it. I don't care any more.

Zhanteimi 06-26-2018 05:32 PM

Trollheart, you would be a very welcome addition to https://www.reddit.com/r/LetsTalkMusic/.

You were wrong. Just because they're one of your favourite bands doesn't mean it's everyone's sacred duty to listen to them.

And it's canon, not cannon. Two words which mean wildly different things.

I'll finish up the Cure and do the VU too, If people want to ignore the threads, well :p:

it's not because I like them I just figured them being so ubiquitous would mean most everyone on a music forum would have had to have heard their core albums, it's the post punk Beatles

honestly if that isn't the case then yeah scrap it because I know I didn't listen to any of the Bowie albums I hadn't heard, I just skipped those threads

It did surprise me a little bit that I wasn't the only person that hadn't really listened to them seeing as they're universally discussed pretty much anywhere that music is involved.

rubber soul 06-28-2018 01:50 AM

Okay, Faith is up for a vote. I'm not going to close the poll in case anyone down the road wants to vote. As always, if you vote, or even if you don't, please comment on the album. You can find Faith here https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...ure-faith.html

And don't forget to vote on Seventeen Seconds if you haven't already

Okay, Pornography is up. Do you prefer Playboy or Hustler? Okay, so it's a bad joke. Anyway you can find the poll here... https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...rnography.html :)

Hey, kiddies. The singles compilation, Japanese Whispers is up for a vote. Does it compare to the earlier albums or is it a dud? You can vote here: https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...-whispers.html

Is this a cute cover or what? :D

Okay, The Head on the Door is up for anyone who wants to give their opinion. The thread is here. https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...head-door.html

And I forgot to link The Top. Maybe that's why it hasn't got any action. Anyway, you can find the thread here. https://www.musicbanter.com/general-...-cure-top.html

I might have an idea on what we can do with artist discographies in the future. I'll start up another thread probably over the weekend. Meanwhile. Check out the Cure albums, won't you? :)
