Still, I've got a feeling the hip hop that I will eventually grow to love will lie in a different direction.

Gift of Gab is a fantastic and underrated MC. Great flow and a lyric genius. The bastard's still touring with Blackalicious despite having kidney disease and needing dialysis three times a week. A true beast.

Seminal metalcore masterpiece from '97 that was hugely influential to the genre in the following years. Definitely one of the best metal and one of the best hardcore albums ever released.

MicShazam 10-20-2018 07:51 AM

I'm gonna get back to these soon enough, but I'm not home at my apartment this weekend.

It's not bad, but I don't feel like checking out more either. If there's an outright turnoff, it would be that strategically raspy designer croon. Reminds me of Bryan Adams.

I do like folk music and modern folk as well. But I'd be more partial to something like Warzaw Village Band or Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band.

It's all about those pretty voices, and she's got that. Actually, this isn't bad at all. More like pretty good. I could maybe actually consider getting the CD. It's a pretty cool song both in terms of composition and the specific way it sounds. Kinda not too far out of my ballpark, considering certain other things that I like.

The Batlord 10-23-2018 02:21 PM

Literally only the first song mentions Vietnam.

MicShazam 10-23-2018 02:22 PM

I noticed that and thought that it was exactly the sort of thing I'd expect in a Vietnam movie soundtrack.

The Batlord 10-23-2018 02:24 PM

Did you actually listen to the whole album?

MicShazam 10-23-2018 02:25 PM

No, but I made sure to find a few songs that seemed different enough from each other and listen to those. I've heard the whole thing before. I'm 90% sure you've made me listen to it way back some time.

I could see that. There aren't any records from that time that sound like Black Monk Time, but its sound is more or less tied to that era.

Marianne Faithfull - Before the Poison (2005)

Before the Poison

If you liked Broken English, you might also dig this.

Most of those were blocked in my region. But I've heard the album before, even owned it. That being in past tense would tell you that I didn't love it. Broken English got me interested in her music where this and A Secret Life failed. Coming back to a couple of these songs, I think I might actually be able to change my mind about Before the Poison. A Secret Life, however, just comes off as kinda awkward to me. Angelo Balamenti works better for soundtracks in weird Lynch movies than as a backdrop for serious, mature pop songs. I do kind of find her musical choices in general to be questionable. I think going through her discography is gonna be a bit rough for me.

It would be great if the whole album isn't necessarily this laid back, but there's not a musical vector along which this didn't strike me as very well done and very charming. Of course that dark, beautifully melancholic atmosphere is a huge part of the appeal here.

There was some saxophone that I really enjoyed.

Pretty good. I seem to be able to like a lot of metalcore from this time period. Charles has shown me several really badass albums from back around then.

There was an especially high standard as far as drumming goes. So much of this stuff has really lively, kinetic drumming.

Second take where I made myself focus on the music: Actually pretty allright, but I'm a tough customer with thrash music. Mostly made me want to listen to Voivod instead. But yeah, I see the appeal as such. It's pretty memorable songwriting.

I like the songwriting and the vocals. Some interesting guitar playing as well. It goes to places that I did not quite expect, based on how it started out. At least in this version, it's not far from some singer/songwriter things that I can be found listening to.

That's an excellent version. Houser unfortunately left WP in 2002 but John Bell's still the frontman as far as I know. Panic are one of the better country-oriented jam bands still running in the circuit today, and Space Wrangler (their debut) I still believe to be pretty underrated.

I'm checking out Space Wrangler, then. Could turn out to be my thing.

EDIT: Now that's what I call an album cover!

Overall impression was of something very tasteful and pretty and moody, but in a way that came off too clean and measured.

But I don't know anything about hip hop anyway. Might be Frown and you other rap heads' album of the year for all I know.

I wanna stress the fact that I thought track number two was pretty good though. That one, I could listen to again.
