Seems like that's the forum member album that's gotten the most listens and enjoyment from 2018. Mondo really made some good stuff.

My go-to fav. of the year:

It's true. He's a talented individual. Him and I gotta collab at some point but I'm in the middle of working on a new album.

Perhaps soon, Mondo? Our styles could mix well I think.

Mondo Bungle 01-02-2019 07:41 PM

sure though I dunno what we should do

Key 01-02-2019 07:45 PM

Do we ever? I'll whip up some samples from my end and send them your way once I have time. Or we can do it reversed. Either way. No rush. This can take months if it has to. I think a collab album would be dope tho.

Mondo Bungle 01-02-2019 07:45 PM

these days I do

Key 01-02-2019 07:47 PM

Fair enough. I was mostly joking.I've been taking my music pretty serously lately so it could work.

OccultHawk 01-02-2019 08:25 PM

I would ****ing love to hear a collaboration from you two

Especially if you really respect each other’s space

It could be really dynamic and exciting

Key 01-02-2019 09:14 PM

Yeah I think it could be pretty dope. We'll see how things work out. I'm on board all the way. I'm really stoked about The Cold Blue to come out though because the tracks I'm making are definitely a bit different but still hold a lot of the same style that I tend to go for. So far, it's an exciting album for sure. A lot more going on in the tracks than I've done previously. Not sure when I'll be done with it but I'm 6 tracks in so who knows.

It reminds me Ryan Adams Heartbreaker (that’s a huge compliment). Usually, I’m partial to the stripped down sound which the album has a lot of but I also love the big production in The Joke. The pairing of the stripped down base with the orchestration reminds me of Stardust by Willie Nelson (which I consider the gold standard). Stardust doesn’t have any songs that build into a big dramatic crescendo like that but the way that the orchestra is used is similar to my mind.

I’d need more listens to really know but yeah I enjoyed it.

Yeah I heard mixed reviews on the production since it's often maximalist, but I personally enjoy it. Definitely comes off like a classic rock / country crossover hit from the late 70's with all the strings, and I mean that in the best possible way. Every song is innately sing-able, even if I can't ever hit those glorious high notes.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. I'm still loving it regularly.

I ****ed up and listened to almost nothing all 2018, so I need to spend 2019 catching up on it.

windsock 01-25-2019 08:55 PM

Then when will you catch up on 2019?

I'm preemptively going to write 2019 off completely and just skip it.

This album rocks holy hell. Creepy af and spine crushing grooves. Definitely hear both The Enslaved and Godflesh influences. Big time 5/5 stars highest ratings.

So happy that you’re still checking out my list! Im glad you like so much of it.

Mojo 02-25-2019 07:50 PM

I wrote my first AOTY list for 2018, which I thought was a great year. My list could have been very different depending on the day of the week I wrote it and the mood I was in however.

I don't agree with this entire list but I love some of it and thus will have to check out the records I haven't heard.

Props for putting Rolo Tomassi in there. I thought that album was great.

Mojo 02-26-2019 03:42 AM

Thanks for having a read. It would be a boring world if we all shared the same opinions but I hope you find some new stuff there you enjoy.

Yeah, Rolo Tomassi are a band I saw when promoting their first album which I enjoyed. Some people that heard me listening to that album or who came to watch their set with me despised every little thing about it. Then I kind of lost track of them for a few years. They obviously continued to evolve.

(Honestly, super underrated album. It got TONS of attention and this immediately tons of hate because they have a ****ing sense of humor and made the album to make fun of Nazis... but actually, it's a great album and their ability to make really, really good lofi black metal is only matched by their ability to trigger actual white nationalists who fill the scene. I can't wait to see what they do next.)

Mondo Bungle 03-25-2019 05:53 PM

if you think that's really really good lofi black metal then some actually really really good lofi black metal ought to come to you as godlike

intensely whatever

He’s the most reliable source for metal recs on the board.

You and Bat are sort of like me with free jazz and ambient drone: so in love with the genre that we fail to be discriminating

His metal recs from 2018 unfailingly have some kind of extra spark that separates it from the pack

Mondo Bungle 03-25-2019 06:01 PM

I'm actually highly discriminating against Neckbeard's intense whateverness
