The Official David Bowie Thread (singer, depeche mode, pop, punk)

Low is a great album, but quite overrated by the hipster crowd.

I love David Bowie, he's one of my all time favorite musicians and I love many of his different musical periods. From his early psychedelic/prog stuff (Space Oddity) to his heavy rock (Man Who Sold the World) to his glam which I consider to be the prime of his career (Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane) to his plastic soul (Young Americans) to his drugged out experimentation (Station to Station, Low, Heroes) and even his 80s pop (Lets Dance).

But as with any prolific artist, there have been failures. Tin Machine is one of the worst abominations against mankind.

i seen bowie live in sydney around 78/79. i think around the time of heros. he had giant vertical fluos behind him across the stage and it was when he was using syths. though he played all the classics what stood out were heros and v2 schnider. live it was great. the crowd went wild when rebel rebel came on as its always been a aussie favorite.

I think it's rated pretty fairly considering it pretty much invented the sound of the 80s. But with you not really being much of a fan of post punk or synth pop I don't really think you can appreciate it's impact fully.

Well I really love Entertainment!, Pink Flag and anything by Joy Division. So I can't dislike post punk THAT much.

But I think that proves my point though. I'm not saying you don't like it , all i'm suggesting is that you don't really listen to a great deal of it as none of those bands were influenced by Low at all.
Had you said Icicle Works , Human League , Teardrop Explodes , Depeche Mode , Adam & the Ants or any of the many others that were influenced by Low then maybe we can talk.

I prefer his Berlin years to his rock years a lot more. 'Station to Station' just pips 'Low' for me. I have a soft spot for 'Tonight' too. 'Loving The Alien', 'Don't Look Down' and 'Neighbourhood Threat' are great tracks. 'Outside' is a great album too.
