COIN COIN Chapter Four: Memphis by Matana Roberts

This is a record that immediately places itself alongside the likes of We Insist, Liberation Music Orchestra, and Spiritual Unity. To be so floored, so amazed, so touched by a record so quickly is very striking. It announces itself unmistakably as one of the greatest jazz records in history immediately. It’s very possible that this album is an artistic conclusion that can only be compared to works from the past; that jazz will never reach this level again. This is the kind of art that makes life worth living.
