They definitely had some stuff that could be called metal, but I'd hold that a good 80-90% of their discography was just punk/hard-rock/rock'n'roll influenced music with an in-your-face sound and Lemmy's vocals + the band's imagery giving them a feel that was palatable to metalheads. Sabbath have metal riffs, Motörhead mostly have rock styled riffs. You can't even find that many palm muted riffs in Motörheads discography and palm-muting is like a metal staple. Very, very few, probably.

I get what you're saying, but I have pretty unique definitions of what makes something metal. I consider there to be quite a bit of metal before Sabbath, despite most people disagreeing. So I'll just say we're both right.

Btw: Sacrifice is probably the closest to undeniably metal they got.

I'm probably thinking of metal being a bit more of a strictly defined thing. I don't even consider at least the first Sabbath album metal. It's borderline and influential, but really just a bunch of blues rock with darker tones.

But I think I get how you look at it and I don't really have a horse in that race. I just personally think of certain musical properties when I think metal.

Windsock - like the rythm and groove and the way the sounds interact. After a while it could use some more variation on first listen, but this is interesting
grindy - love it, also wonderful rhytmically and sonically it sort of tickles your ears
unitron - I don't really care for the cosmic psychos song, but I like Black Sabbath a lot. It's the only 'metal' band I'd given a chance besides Led Zeppelin. I like the second Motörhead song less than the first, the engine-like guitar drone and vocals sound more metal in that way I've never cared for. I did really enjoy the guitar solo part though
