And for a casual fan whatever. Even for a pop music critic whatever (plus a sigh). They could save themselves that embarrassment by simply not having the audacity to put a number on anything by Archie Shepp, which would also signal to me that they know how to stay in their ****ing lane.

They do excellent and informative write ups on jazz records and I respect that but they’re not serious jazz critics. They should respect their limitations.

I don't know **** about jazz. So maybe it's rated like that in the context of jazz music.

I think numeric ratings are reductive in general though, for this reason. I'm more interested in what they have to say about the album than the actual rating when watching/reading a review anyways.

I like numeric ratings for new releases because it expedites the purpose.

It serves no purpose for music that is already canonical.

Even at your most cantankerous I doubt you seriously believe there would ever be any reason for me to defer to pitchfork when it comes to jazz from the 1960’s.
