I mean the "**** you imma scratch my ass in public if i want" of punk was just such a sentiment of that period of western civilization and the populace deciding that holy **** all of this sucks, **** this, **** that, **** you, **** everything that to ascribe the same to earlier periods in any greater sense is ridiculous. Maybe black people said the same thing en masse with music before, but punk was when white people said it and white people are who we're talking about.

Except punk never really did figure out how to top this. Almost like there were a few thunderous foundational bands and the bands who weren't going the post-punk route couldn't hang with the OG's who did it just cause they were too crazy not to do it.
