Music Banter's Top Albums of 2020
What were y'alls top albums?
I'll start. Maybe we could vote on a consensus of 10 albums we all liked idk. 10 Your Arms are My Cocoon - S/T I've followed this particular artist on insta for some time now and he's now released this impressive collection of songs that combine bedroom pop sensibilities with screamo. There's an array of different instruments used and song structures go everywhere, it's very like Brave Little Abacus in that way. 9 M Geddes Gengras - Time Makes Nothing Happen The sound design I heard on a previous album of his was immaculate so I had to check out what was billed as a progressive electronic/minimal techno album and it surely delivers. It's glitchy, it's dancey, it checks all the boxes for what I want in a techno album. 8 Code Orange - Underneath I checked out Swallowing the Rabbit Whole when I was waiting for my therapist to call me in to the office before COVID started and it was some heavy ****. Probably one of the Industrial Metal albums most worthy of holding that title, since it's clanging, dissonant, has crazy production, and it's hard to decide b/w this and Methwitch's album from this year as this spot because that one is even more dissonant and chaotic. 7 Denzel Curry x Kenny Beats - Unlocked I put Denzel on last years list but I think this one is more deserving of a spot, the bars are more memorable, the production is tighter, the length is perfect. Pig Feet is an incredibly moving song and I'm disappointed that it came out after this project. Though the two are very different, idk I just like having singles on albums. 6 Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin kynsi Kvlt ****. Wish Mondo was still here so we could talk about how good this **** is. Some of the most demonic and frightening **** metal has to offer in this day and age. 5 Against All Logic - 2017-2019 A collection of songs that vary wildly in style. The first track is my favorite, I used to play it while stocking at Food Lion. The rest of the tracks range from tech house to ebm to a track featuring Lydia Lunch. It's good techno for sure. 4 Arca - KiCk i I bought this **** on vinyl hell yeah. This year, neoperreo became something I really got into and I'm glad Arca includes those reggaeton influences all over this project. Speaking of, it's easily Arca's most accessible stuff but that's not a bad thing at all. It's catchy, it slaps. What more can I say? It sounds like Aphex Twin pop numbers. Very good stuff. 3 Mucoid - Disaster! I have a split with Dan but this album stands on it's own. It's outsider house with breakbeats and hypnagogic samples all culled from video games and heavily edited. 2 Machine Girl - MG Demo Disc I was listening to this when COVID started shutting down concerts and I was about to start working my first job of the year. It's really good, idk. I like Machine Girl's digi-hardcore stuff a lot but I also groove down to their Hardcore Breaks/Footwork stuff so I'm glad there's more of that in the world bc of this album. 1 Wednesday - I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone This album truly grew on me to become my favorite of the year. It's shoegaze with bedroom pop sensibilities and some really great lyricism and melodies. It's really a shoegaze favorite now and deservedly so. It also helps that this particular artist is local, from Asheville, NC. Hopefully someday I'll be able to meet them :) What are some of y'alls favs? |
My favorite this year is Wednesday - I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone. I wanted to buy the vinyl but didn't :(. I don't know enough to sort out what's worth really worth it and make a list out of it. I've checked "2020 albums you're digging" and I only posted 3 albums.

My listening habits have been drifting away from current releases a lot over the last two years but these are the albums I heard this year that I enjoyed.
Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today Yo La Tengo - We Have Amnesia Sometimes Horse Lords - The Common Task Dan Deacon - Mystic Familiar The Necks - Three Horse Lords might edge out the rest as my fav. |
I never manage to keep up with current music, but of what I heard the standouts were:
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters. What a wonderful surprise Thumbscrew - The Anthony Braxton Project. Introduced me to a new world of music, and Mary Halvorson. Thanks Frown Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher. I wasn't into her music before, but this clicked, and the last track was a catalyst for working through a lot of unprocessed emotions. Bless Phoebe Anna Högberg Attack - Lena. Listening to it right now actually. Moving and powerful My Cat is an Alien - Eternal Beyond II. thanks Frown x2 Star Feminine Band - s/t. It sparks so much joy that I'm amazed nobody made it illegal |
My top albums of the year:
Tame Impala - The slow rush - they just keep putting out excellent stuff, this one was full of earworms, very dancey. Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud - Excellent, catchy folk/alt. country. Tried her earlier albums and they are either too noisy or not catchy enough. HAIM - Women In Music Pt. III - Very catchy pop album, they are getting better with each release. Perfume Genius - Set My Heart On Fire Immediately - Maybe his best, or at least, the most consistent and listenable album. Fleet Foxes - Shore - Back to a more traditional sound after the experimentation of Crack-up. I appreciate it. (Saw them live a few years ago, they were excellent) Destroyer - Have We Met - Never heard about this guy before this album, then went back through a few of his last albums, I prefer Kapput but this one has one of my favorite lyrics of all time: You throw yourself down on the playground Skid to a halt on the runway You cast a poisonous look to the sun You know it just doesn't happen to anyone You know this doesn't just happen to anyone So visual, so dramatic. Love it. Grimes - Miss Anthropocene - Probably her most accessible album. Just a great dance album. Love to listen to it on the headphones. Edit: The Killers - Imploding the mirage - I haven't payed much attention to these guys in many years, this album seems like a return to form, chock full of catchy songs and lots of great energy. |

havent really been keeping up with new music
like u said Machine girl & BMTH new music was pretty good this year SUGIZO 絶彩 (feat. 京) [LIVE IN TOKYO]... was a pretty dope Duet with KYO Code orange drop a album at the perfect time COVID ground zero i think im missing some stuff but yeahhh .... im still stuck on all the ollldd stuff 2000-2019 o and Mr bungle released a pretty good thrash Demo :P |
I hardly keep up with new music, so I to cram really hard overnight for this test.
Wednesday - I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone I found this album (on discog.com) back when it was release earlier this year and loved it from the start. I played it a dozen times, so it's my most played album released in 2020. They have those slightly distorted driving guitar and clean arpeggios a la Weezer. However they're not slavishly reproducing =W=. Their sound is more like =W= 2.0 Culk – Zerstreuen Über Euch Culk is an Austrian band. The moody Dark Wave is just delectable. Rumer – Nashville Tears: The Songs Of Hugh Prestwood I have to admit I'm so far out of the Country music loop I didn't know anything about him before I heard this album - though I'm familiar with the singer. This is her third album of cover songs and she dedicated this album to the songs of Hugh Prestwood. I enjoy his songwriting. The lyrics unfold a story like Bobby Russell. Rumer sings with the sincerity of Kate Wolf. I don't know how it ranks to other Country albums this year. Hey for all I know it could be shot down by Country aficionados - idk. I just enjoy the album. Nilovic & The Soul Surfers – Maze Of Sounds Janko Nilović is 79 y/o and has been playing music since the 1950s. The music sounds very much like it's straight from 70s, but there's modern elements to it. I were to break it down I would say the bass playing and drumming sound like they are paying homage to 70s style (mostly Funk, among other things), but Janko's playing sounds authentically 70s. |

So is this: Silver Ladders by Mary Lattimore https://marylattimoreharpist.bandcam...silver-ladders http://narcmagazine.com/wp-content/u...70.172.108.jpg |
I don't really like rating and ranking stuff so here's simply a bunch of releases from this year that I consider to be good and worth checking out.
The genre designations have been done quickly and sloppily. I didn't bother to go any deeper than the very general "Jazz", "Electronica" or "Metal", filed Krautrock albums under "Psychedelic Rock" and Math Rock albums under "Prog" or "AvantProg" and kept using the somewhat questionable label "Free Rock" and so on. I don't have a lot. maybe one or two. I will try to search.
From bandcamp Airs by Mhairi Hall https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2971942417_16.jpg This one was my favorite so far in 2020. Marie Monday not sure if you will like it. Solas an Lae - The Light of the Day by Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin & Ultan O'Brien https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2587827865_16.jpg This one is ok, a bit long, I only liked one song from the album very much Cúirt Bhaile Nua. First Steps by Brown Boots https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0277015788_16.jpg This was ok, nice, I don't remember very much only listened once (a long time ago) but the first listening was enjoyable. Ag Iascaireacht by Brían Ó Laoi https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2269308140_16.jpg This was cute. Very short. Tranquility in Tureencahill by Bryan O'Leary https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3368855277_16.jpg Listened yesterday, it was nice. Den Kaldsteikte by Guro Kvifte Nesheim & Mats Edén https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2440311188_16.jpg This was nice at first listening. Uilleann Piping from County Waterford by Caoimhín Ó Fearghail https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3531144512_16.jpg This was nice, I don't have a lot to say about it, first listening I enjoyed it. The Old Favorite by Benjamin Foss https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0241458448_16.jpg Not my thing really, but it was ok. The Airing by Rebecca Hill https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3346259960_16.jpg This was ok, first listening. The Green Hills by Aoife Blake https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a0576808587_16.jpg This was ok, first listening, not sure about it. |
My top 21 is in my sig. Some gems there that might appeal to a few of you.
grindy, that list is fantastic. I was also unaware the boys from Pinkish Black put out something new. Gonna go dig through the ones on your list I haven't heard. |
my top 23 (in memory of Genesis) with some comments on my top ten of 2020.....
23. Uniform - Shame 22. Bob Mould - Blue Hearts 21. Steven Von Till - No Wilderness Deep Enough 20. Kairon; IRISE - Polysomn 19. Wire - Mind Hive 18. Drain - California Cursed 17. The Residents - Metal, Meat and Bone: The Songs Of Dyin' Dogs 16. Eisturzende Neubauten - Alles In Allen 15. Run The Jewels - RTJ4 14. Dark Buddha Rising - Mathreyata 13. Couch Slut - Take A Chance On Rock N Roll 12. Rome - The Lone Furrow 11. Idles - Ultra Mono 10. Today Is The Day - No Good To Anyone Steve Austin's 11th full length and fuck does he still hate humans.....This is an amazing mixture of classic noise rock with experimental metal arrangements....a constant reminder that to truly be misanthropic you have to hate yourself the most 9. Brainbombs - Cold Chase 9th album by the Swedish noise rock legends and they finally added a little production....a softer feel to their earlier work....but still unbelievably relentless in the lyrical delivery and assault on the listener....and still enamored with serial killers 8. Chief Tail - Chief Tail It's not everyday an up and coming band formed out the dead and infamous Richmond VA band PCP Roadblock gets to record their debut with Steve Albini...the result is an absolute rocket ride down Am Rep era noise rock....this album is short...dirty...and to the fucking point 7. The Goners - Good Mourning this makes me think of Time To Die era Electric Wizard getting really drunk and doing a bunch of blow then attempting garage punk album.....really heavy b-horror film inspired lyrics....these Swedish guys made a kick ass rock record....hands down best album cover of 2020 6. Hum - Inlet In 2015 my friend Carson and i traveled to Portland OR to catch a Hum reunion show.....just a couple of months later we met again in Santa Cruz to catch a Ride reunion and was nostalgic over these great 9 rock bands getting back together and hopefully releasing new material....Ride did it a year later and now Hum.....this is....in my opinion...and amazing comeback....albeit a little repetitive....this album picks up right where they left off 20 years ago.....which is fine by me 5. Jesu - Terminus Justin Broadrick can do no wrong in my mind.....and this is just a continuation of the feeling I feel like he has always tried to invoke with Jesu....the last Godflesh album was an amazing return to that wonderful pounding industrial sound....and this is an amazing return to long fuzzing feelings of absolute despondency 4. Human Impact - Human Impact There is no denning that i will 100% love anything Chris Spencer touches....but putting a band together with ex members of Unsane, Cop Shoot Cop, Swans, Angels of Light, and Flux Information Sciences....FUCK....mind blown.....I remember a few years ago when he release the fist UXO album and my friend told me...."this just sounds like Unsane" and I responded with...."It sounds like Unsane if Today is the Day wrote the guitar arrangements"....this sounds nothing like Unsane....and is an album that forces the listener to look at themselves and see the horrible things they have done to this world....the musical arrangements are amazing as to be expected from such an amazing group of musicians 3. Soccer Mommy - Color Theory My before mentioned friend got me onto this album mid year and I listened to it constant for a couple of months.....there is no way around it...Sophie Allison has amazing song writing ablity....she writes damn near perfect songs that make me smile as much as they pull my deepest heat strings....i thought for sure Color Theory would be my album of the year until I found these last two and was floored 2. Hoaries - Rocker Shocker I love noise rock.....this is nothing short of noise rock gold....I remember hearing in an interview about Lubricated Goat that the Aussies will also create great music because they ****ing love the Stooges....these guys are from Dallas and rose from the ashes of the amazing band White Drugs (RIP)...and they hold to that statement....this is noise rock at it's best...to quote their label...."For **** sake, they even manage to make a SADÉ cover work" 1. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher Two really strange things happened for me this year......I agree with what is considered the greatest book of 2020....The Boy, The Mole, The Fox And The Horse....is the greatest book written and defines everything we all really need right now....i literally dropped tears all over myself reading it.....and I agree with this amazing multi Grammy nominated album as being the best album of 2020.....a co-worker asked me if I had heard this....I replied no and asked for a link...a couple of days later I pulled her up on Spotify....I liked Garden Song.....loved Kyoto.....Really loved Punisher.....fell more in Love with Moon Song....and absolutely melted with I Know The End....I went back and listened to her career and it's all really good....but not this good....this is what I will listen to when I reflect on this contrived year.....especially I Know The End....the melancholy beginning....the middle build up....fucking amazing.....that scream at the end....she has managed to encompass all of my emotions in this crazy year....and I will love her forever for this album |

Do your parents ever talk about Haile Selassie or other political or historical things about Ethiopia? Do you identify as an Ethiopian Jew? That’s an extremely interesting ethnicity. Also, I’ve always wanted to visit Israel. I’ve heard that Tel Aviv has some of the most exciting nightlife on the planet. Where have you been? Where have you traveled to? |
It's difficult to explain in English.
Yes they did. Yes I do. I don't do much traveling. Tel Aviv is great for culture and art. |

Fire, do you know much about Ethiopian music, and Ethiopian jazz in particular? I know some music be Getatchew Mekurya (I can't do the accents) which I love so I'd like to learn more. I'm interested in any part of Ethiopian culture really, it seems like a fascinating country

I wasn't into it when I was growing up, it was just there like a lot of music, metal rock hip hop disco punk classical opera electronic trance reggae pop. I was exposed to different types of music. But what captured my ears was Irish music I was fascinated by it, and I was trying to listen to different cultures musician when I had my first last.fm account. I have been in a song contest online on last.fm LSC = last.fm song contest it was a group, the group went to Facebook since the changes in 2015, I joined there two years ago, I have created a YouTube playlist of my submissions, I will try to update it and share it has a bit of different styles but not a lot. I will try to get you recommendations on Ethiopian music. |
Don't worry, it's really cool that you developed a fascination with Irish music, I'm happy with anything you recommend
|
Quote:
I hope you will like it. https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=...rJk-js1OvPi-on Not all are Irish music. It's a mix. One song is missing from the playlist because it was deleted. Wonderwall by Metome https://plumus.jp/album/wonderwall Here is the album from bandcamp. Listen to Os Papaqueixos (name of the band) - O Rabisaco (the name of the song) https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/diyAJ Here is another one is missing I have added the full album version because the single is a private video. I will try to find the recommendations, I need my laptop for this, on my phone it's difficult. Hopefully tomorrow. |
awesome, thanks!
|
If you want you can join the group. If you have last.fm or much better Facebook. You can meet other people and listen to what they are listening even if you don't like the music it's nice to be exposed to different things.
|
I don't have last fm and honestly I think one internet music group is all I can handle (at least for now), but thanks for letting me know, I'll keep it in mind!
|
Fire, a few Irish ones you may not (or may) be aware of...
My favourite of hers: The great Clannad Planxty Moving hearts Ireland's favourite son Christy Moore |
I know all (except the first one) of them but I will check them.
Thanks :) You can recommend different things I will try it and give feedback. |
I liked Rita Connolly very much I will check her more tonight.
Davy I know and this particular piece, I have a CD collection called cry of the celts 2002 and it's there. Mary I also know, no frontiers is nice but I liked the corrs version more, the second song was a bit boring. Clannad I know, I didn't get into their music to be honest. Planxty I also know, they were ok, I always preferred the bothy band more. Moving hearts I have heard of but didn't listen yet, an ok song not sure if I like their sound. Christy I know I don't know if I actually listened to him this song is ok a bit slow. |
Ok let's see what we can do about that.
Mary Black A faster Christy song What about some rebel songs Ireland has a wealth of music, from trad (traditional folk) and rock to (god help us) country and pop, so I guess it would be helpful to know the kind of stuff you prefer. |
