The thing I have against Clapton is his ridiculous and dangerous and irresponsible anti-vaxx stance. Love him or hate him, the man has massive influence and what he says gets listened to. I'm no particular fan - I have two of his albums - but I could take or leave him till he started ranting about how people who refuse to vaccinate are being "discriminated" against. I wouldn't be that surprised to find he believes Trump won too. (1,2?) On this, in principle at least, I'm with Batty: **** Clapton, and Eric, despite what they said about you and what you may personally believe, you are not God and do not have the right to endanger the lives of other people with your uninformed rhetoric.

I don't think there's any need for anyone to set up their soapbox here. However when you ask the question about Clapton, given his irresponsible comments, I think he deserves to be called out about that in a thread about him.

I have no idea what the other stuff is that you're talking about Dianne: I don't think anyone mentioned GM food or anything like that, so it seems like you're trying to widen the discussion a little disingenuously for the sake of making a point about something about which nobody has spoken. I doubt you can equate "force fed antibiotics" in animals with a request - not an order, a request - that everyone protect themselves and others by getting a potentially life-saving vaccine.

Anyway I've had my say about Clapton in a non-musical way, so I'll bow out now. I suggest any major politics regarding him or anything else outside of his attitude to Covid be taken to the appropriate thread, maybe in my Racism thread or somewhere in the current affairs anyway.

On the strength of the Clapton autobiog I once read, I can say the EC never had any illusions about being god, Trollheart - but he was a real self-absorbed drama queen in my opinion. His love affair with Pattie Boyd, we are led to believe, is Romeo&Juliette, John&Yoko, etc. all rolled into one.
How many times can a person hit rock bottom? I always assumed it was like one or maybe two in a lifetime, whereas EC, victim of various addictions, was hitting what he called "a rock bottom" every other chapter of his book.(That little word "a" is significant, because it tells us "one of various") Bits of his autobiog read like a teenager's endless weekend in Hell: "Pattie didn't call. I'm going to kill myself - or perhaps I'll do a ton of drugs instead."

But as Dianne says, he has impressive musical pedigree; great skills, of course, and a personal manner that made him a popular collaborator with other musicians. Very commendable too is his Crossroads Festival and charity work with (I think) addicted musicians.

Up in the Pantheon of high-achieving rock stars, perhaps it's too much to expect him to make good choices elsewhere. His "keep britain white" rant was way out of line imo, and on medical science it seems like he can't distinguish between anecdotal and statistical evidence. In that, sadly, he is far from alone :(

As far as your (ahem) opinions, of course you have a right to them but you also have to understand that those that clearly disagree have a right to call you out on it. I was so tempted to ask you who you thought owned England (and from what I know about English racism, I think I already know the answer), but the better angels, and Marie, prevailed.

Anyway, as far as Clapton goes, I'll just say I'm very disappointed in the man personally, especially given his friendship with George Harrison, but I'll try to enjoy the music at least (Clapton isn't the first person to disappoint me and I'm sure he won't be the last).

I never said I liked Eric Clapton. I went to some of his first concerts in Wallington Halls, Stafford Road,Wallington..where it was just a hall..so loved the music.
Think we all feel a soap box time...Just about all my close Family is affected by Cancer in one way or another and mostly it is about how we live now.
I get to see this week maybe or next the outcome of my prob. Guess I am not up for this kind of a send up.

I watched this with interest. If fact most of the performers behaved pretty well, imo. I hardly noticed that some of them were angry, but it made me realize that along with the singing, they have to be ready for a bit of crowd control too. My favourite moment: Lady Gaga sounding like someone's mum: "If you're going to fight over it, neither of you can have it!" Haha!

My point about Clapton might not have been made clearly enough, Lisna. Obviously, I was referring (as you doubtless know) to the popular phrase "Clapton is God" but also pointing out that by trying to influence people's opinions for the worse, in a struggle between life and death (i.e., telling them not take the vaccine and advocating against it) he is in fact playing God.

He used to be in sixties rock band Cream, and if you don't know "Layla" by Derek and the Dominoes, which is him, kill yourself. The guy had good music, though I was never a fan, but I will think twice before listening to him again. I have two vinyl albums by him, but like all my vinyl they're gathering dust.

I won't put up any YouTube videos in case he hears about it and sues me.
